A deeper look at how things happen shows that some of the food habits that drive metabolic events that lead to obesity also lead to vascular inflammation, insulin resistance, and atherosclerosis and death. Obesity is repeatedly shown to be ASSOCIATED with higher risk of heart attacks because some things that cause it also cause death. The great error in oversimplified discussions of clinical reports about obesity is that "obesity causes death". We are losing years of life and trillions of dollars to a preventable problem because of illogical treatment of all associated and predictive risk factors (obesity, diabetes, vascular disease) as if they all caused death. A constructive, economical approach is to prevent voluntarily the modifiable food habits that are CAUSING the often-fatal events. Blending nutrition advice with some biochemical knowledge of molecular connections between food and death can prevent trillions of dollars in health-related losses by USA employee and employers. A long journey of understanding is made one step at a time. Underweight = bad but how many people are anywhere near underweight or have to be worried about that? It's absurd to pit that against the issue of being overweight and sedentary. Your idea of quite trim is not my idea, so define some terms. I looked up Bacon's CV, and she spent 8 years working on a computer support company and subsequent years working for HAES. No hidden agenda there. Didn't last long as a nutritionist or health coach, she'd decided that every weight is healthy long before she got her PhD. She talks about food struggles, never discusses exercise. She tells me what MY diet struggles are. Funny, I find dieting to be like budgeting; it requires changing how you view and use food for the long haul, not just long enough to pay off your credit card debt. If I revert back to type, yeah I fail. But the diet didn't. Sedentary computer support staff - weird hours and lighting, lots of junk food lying around the office - it's very difficult to eat right if you live a totally sedentary lifestyle.
