The Federal Food and Drug Adminstration has issued an urgent recall after it was discovered that a supposedly herbal diet pill contained the prescription-only medication Reductil and ingredients believed to cause cancer.
The slimming tablets are called Pai You Guo and are manufactured by GMP Herbal Products. The FDa carried out laboratory analysis on the product, which showed that the though not declared on the ingredient list, the product contained phenolphthalein, a solution once used in chemical experiments and associated with an increased risk of cancer. It has not been approved for sale in the U.S.
The drugs also contained sibutramine, the medical name for Reductil tablets. Reductil is widely prescribed to help the obese lose weight but should only be used with a doctor’s supervision as it can significantly increase blood pressure and when taken by patients with a history of cardiovascular disease or stroke can present a significant risk.
The product, offered to customers as a way to encourage rapid weight loss, was sold in boxes containing 30 capsules or in 10g bags of powder. They were distributed over the internet.
So far there have not been any reported injuries or illnesses caused by the diet pills. The California-based GMP Herbal Products however said that as the FDA had not approved the slimming tablets to be sold as a drug, as its safety and effectiveness was unknown.
The company in a statement said that they worked with the FDA to remove the slimming pills off the shelves because they were “committed to providing accurate information about its products and because of the concern for the health and safety of consumers.”
The recall in a series carried out by the FBA who have discovered large amounts of diet pills and herbal supplements to contain undeclared ingredient such as Reductil.
Customers who bought the pills have been advised by the FDA to either destroy them immediately or return them to the company. The FDA added that any consumers who experience adverse reactions after taking the product should contact their doctor immediately and should later report them to the agency’s MedWatch program.
