The wrestling team opened Big Ten Play with two tight meets this past weekend, but only could pull out one of them. The Ohio State Wrestling team beat Indiana in St. John's Arena last Friday 18-16. They then proceeded to lose by that same score in the same place last Sunday to Minnesota. The weekend found the formerly fifth-ranked Buckeyes 10-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Big Ten.

Indiana came into Columbus ranked 19th in the nation. A large crowd of 1,473 was in attendance to watch the tight match. The meet started out auspiciously with David Rella upsetting 15th-ranked Trevor Perry in the 174 weight class with a decision based on a last second take down.

Mike Pucillo then pinned Eric Cameron in the first period with :19 seconds to go to put the Buckeyes up to win his ninth match of the season. Pucillo is perfect on the season, having missed most of the season with an ankle injury. The fall gave the Buckeyes six points on top of Rella's three for a Buckeye 9-0 lead.

Cody Gardener and formerly 17th-ranked Corey Morrision dropped their matches to put the score at 9-6. Morrison's match was decided by one point (4-3). Nikko Triggas had to face sixth-ranked Angel Escobedo in the 125 weight-class. Escobedo won, tying the meet at 9 all. Patt Harringtion lost his match 12-4, a major decision, to give the Buckeyes a four point deficit (13-9).

National champion J Jaggers turned the momentum of the meet around by beating Andeae Hernandez in the 141 weight class. Lance Palmer, ranked fourth in the nation, easily beat Nick Walpole for a 15-13 Buckeye lead. Twelfth-ranked Kurt Kinser of Indiana, however, edged out 157 pound Sean Nemec to give the Hoosiers the lead.

Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, their hopes were pinned on unranked Paul Young defeating the 21-3 Colt Sponseller, ranked second in the nation in the 165 pound weight class. Sponseller is now 24-3 on the season.

Sunday provided a similarly tough meet. Nearly 1,300 fans showed up for the White Out, but the Golden Gophers brought a tough squad that ultimately was too much for the Wrestling Buckeyes. The meet started out fairly epic, with National Champion J Jaggers facing off against fifth-ranked Jayson Ness. Jaggers, who was ranked 12th at the time of the match, had beaten Ness in the '09 National Duals. This time, however, Jaggers fell in an overtime match 6-4.

Lance Palmer gave the Buckeyes the 149 spot, but 14th ranked Golden Gopher was too much for freshman Sean Nemec.

Colt Sponseller, however, took over his match against 16th ranked Golden Gopher Scott Glasser and got the Buckeyes a major decisions and a one point lead, 7-6. Dave Rella and Mike Pucillo added to the lead with a major decision and a merciless tech fall respectively to put the Buckeyes up 16-6.

Unfortunately, the Buckeyes would lose the next four matches to lose 18-16. The losing streak was highlighted by then-17th ranked Corey Morrison losing to 18th-ranked Ben Berhow and then No.1 in the 133 Reece Humphry being bested by the fifth-ranked Jayson Ness.

The Wrestling team travels to Happy Valley to wrestle the Penn State Nittany Lions on Friday. They return to their own stomping grounds on Sunday to play Purdue.
