How would you like to stay younger looking all the time? Are you taking care of your skin the way that you should? If you feel that your skin doesn't appear as young as it should, you can still put a stop to the aging process and reclaim your youth. Proper skin care is your key to a healthy and youthful look.

All of us want to look our best all the time. Our skin is the best façade to show the world how we have taken good care of ourselves. A healthy looking skin, whether it has wrinkles or not, will exude a youthful glow no matter how old you are. Poor diet, smoking and too much sun exposure will show their harmful effects on the skin and add years to a person's appearance.

Have you ever wondered why your skin looks older than it should? You may not be aware of it but your skin's top layer called the epidermis replaces itself about every 27 days. This is possible through washing and friction. Underneath the epidermis is a much thicker layer called the dermis. This is where the new exterior skin is formed. The dermis is composed of collagen fibers that are used to support the skin and provide elasticity to it and then a layer of fat acting as a protective cushion. The fat is responsible for creating the beautiful contours that fill and shape your face and body.

The aging process breaks down the elasticity of collagen and at the same time shrinkage of the subcutaneous fats that provide cushion and shape to your face and body. These processes make the bony areas of your face more prominent. Aging also makes the skin thinner allowing the tiny blood vessels and some uneven coloration more visible. The thinner and less elastic skin begins to sag with time and gravity. Facial muscle actions like smiling and frowning will also leave their marks on your face.

How can you provide better skin care to slow down the aging process? Nutritious diet and exercise are the two most important factors in maintaining a young and healthy looking skin that no amount of skin care products like creams, lotions and cosmetic procedures can do.

Proper diet with a regular supply of the necessary nutrients like protein, fat, minerals, vitamins and plenty of water can make your skin appear glowing and youthful. There are antioxidant vitamins which include vitamins E, C and A. These vitamins are very important and helpful in the fight against free radicals. Free radicals are the unstable oxygen molecules that are believed to be causing cell and tissue damage, which accelerate the aging process.

Exercise also contributes to a young looking skin. More oxygen-rich blood is pumped through the body during exercise. This process speeds up the elimination of toxic materials from the body and facilitates the quick growth of new cells. It is estimated that about 7 percent of the oxygen that a person breathes in is utilized by the skin. People as they grow older usually performs less exercise routines because of the decreasing physical agility thus taking in less oxygen that is needed by the skin to keep looking younger. This consequence is usually reflected in the skin of older individuals.
