Hoop legend Stevens to lead Burton Bentley girls

The 1998 Atherton graduate, a two-time All-Stater who later starred at Cornell University, spent last season as Davison's junior varsity coach. Stevens was contacted by Bentley Athletic Director Bill McLemore in late May when R.C. Wilcox announced he was stepping down after seven seasons.

"I was not sure if I was going to coach anywhere at the high school level next season, but I saw this as great opportunity when Mr. McLemore contacted me," said Stevens, who spends much of her time with the Flint City Ministry's youth basketball outreach program and personal training. "Coach Wilcox created quite a legacy at Bentley and should be commended for the organization he built. I want to carry that on and expound on it and I like that the position is close to home."

Stevens still holds state records for steals in a game (22) and career steals (683) and owns area records for steals in a season (210) and single-season scoring (732 points). She is third on the area's career scoring list with 2,103 points.

Stevens ranks first in Cornell history in career steals (213) and free throws made (394) and is third in career scoring (1,327 points) and assists (339) and fourth in rebounding (593). She made the All-Ivy League first team as a senior in 2001-02.

Upon graduation, Stevens moved to Rochester and began working for a sports management firm before obtaining a master's degree in business administration. She then moved back to Burton and began work with the Flint City Ministry. Stevens has also worked at various basketball camps and clinics over the years.

Coaching is something she has longed to do, but the timing never seemed right.

"When I graduated from Cornell, I wanted to coach in the college ranks," she said. "I applied for some assistant jobs, but nothing panned out. I was also going to be an assistant at Oakland University, but decided to move back to this area instead. Now, I am finally getting the opportunity to teach what I know about the game to others. That's the best thing about coaching."

So far, Stevens could hardly be more pleased.

"Every day I am more pleased because the girls are great to be around and they are open-minded with great attitudes," she said. "We're having more open gyms and will go to team camp next week. They have been busy improving as a team already."

Next season's team will be inexperienced. All three players, who earned some type of all-league honor graduated from last year's squad which finished 14-9.

"We'll really focus on defense, especially to begin the season," Stevens said. "We'll also have a team of girls who can play every position. We lost a lot of talent and leadership, but I have always hoped for the best. Some people have mentioned that five or six wins might be what we are looking at, but we certainly have bigger goals than that."

The Bulldogs have not won fewer than 10 games since 2000, the year before Wilcox took over after retiring from teaching. Despite having to contend with state powers like New Lothrop, Hamady and Goodrich, Wilcox, 66, guided Bentley to a 101-55 record in his tenure, including three district and one league (GAC Blue) championship.

"Do Stevens is a great choice for the program because she's very enthusiastic and ready to do everything that's required," Wilcox said. "She has great knowledge of the game, but also understands that it's just not about Xs and Os, but connecting with players and building confidence in them and preparing them to succeed in life. I'm sure she'll do an outstanding job."
