Jordan sp trainer - Shop sales, stores & prices at TheFind.com LUCKY DAY: Jockey Richard Hughes on his mount, Lucky General, celebrates after winning the Goffs Million Sprint at the Curragh yesterday.

The millions were for export at the Curragh yesterday, as on one of Europe's richest race days, which featured the two richest two-year-old races on the continent, the spoils were landed by two British raiders.

Richard Hannon has made a habit of farming the lucrative sales races over the past number of years and he added another to his portfolio when training Lucky General to a 1,000,000 winning pot for prominent owner Julie Wood.

Ridden by the local Richard Hughes, Lucky General was extremely well supported to win the pot, being backed from a morning price of 14/1 into a SP as short as 11/2, and having been slightly off the pace in the early stages the Hawk Wing colt rallied late to stay on and win a shade cosily at the line, seeing off his stable-mate Full Mandate by a length and three parts.

Hannon had last year landed both Goffs Millions races, also saddling a one-two in what was known as the Fillies Millions last year, and he made his raids ever more successful at HQ yesterday.

"He's always been a lovely horse," said Richard Hannon jnr afterwards. "Hughesy said he couldn't go the early pace but it's obviously a great advantage to be drawn on that side.

"That'll be him for the year and it is great for Julie, his owner, who is one of our biggest owners, and certainly one of the most enthusiastic."

SURPRISE

Hannon had more to celebrate following the running of the Goffs Millions Mile, as Nurture flew home to finish third, claiming 150,000 in the process, but it was Scottish trainer Mark Johnston who was doing the celebrating as Shakespearean triumphed in the hands of Joe Fanning.

A Group Three winner last time, Shakespearean was one of the hotly tipped fancies for the second of the sales races yesterday, and his form proved to be a fruitful guide for those going on the book as the British raider just managed to hold on from the ever-closing Marfach and Nurture.

He said, "I was surprised he wasn't more fancied because he was the only one that had been and done it with Group form, and I thought he was the one that they all had to beat in the race to be honest."

Johnson was having a very profitable day overseas and he revealed: "I was just praying for the line to come at the end, and I just saw we won the Group One race in Germany by a whisker so it has probably been my best ever five minutes."

St Nicholas Abbey became the new 8/1 favourite for next season's Epsom Derby with Boylesports after landing the Group Two Beresford Stakes, the race won by Sea The Stars last season.

A 2/5 chance, it was the Mark Johnston-trained Layali Al Andalus that made the Aidan O'Brien-trained son of Montjeu pull out more stops than would have been envisaged, but he still went on a shade snugly under Murtagh to confirm his possible Classic credentials for next season.

The Ballydoyle maestro said: "He is a lovely horse and he came forward from his first run. It is possible we will look at the Racing Post Trophy with him but that is not definite. Johnny was really impressed with him and he thought a lot and was a bit snug at the line. He looks a Classic-type horse for next year."

Winning rider Johnny Murtagh said: "You would have to be impressed with him. That is two from two now and there is a good chance he could be top class. He is not short of speed, his acceleration is pretty good, so I wouldn't rule out a mile with him, but he could be a Derby horse for next year."

Trainer Paul Deegan chalked up the first of what will undoubtedly be many Group winners as recent Karl Burke recruit Lady Springbank landed the CL Weld Park Stakes by a half length from another Mark Johnston contender Bikini Babe.

Sent to Ireland for an ease in the ground, connections were concerned by the drying conditions but the Choisir filly had no issues under Willie Supple and will now step up to the Cheveley Park Stakes, according to Deegan.

"She did it very well, settled well and saw it out brilliantly. She is in the Cheveley Park so we will probably let her take her chance there. She was sent here for softer ground so I was worried about the drying but she handled it."
