Pfizer Explains PMU Cuts

Changes in market demand are behind major cuts to Manitoba's PMU industry according to a spokesperson for Pfizer Canada.
Around 40 Manitoba producers have had their contracts terminated.
Pfizer acquired the production facility in Brandon from Wyeth in October of 2009. A company spokesperson says along with the acquisition, they conducted a review and determined that less PMU collection was needed. This was due to changes in market demand and a shift toward lower doses for post-menopausal hormone therapy.
The company says it's decreasing PMU production by around 60 percent. The changes will also affect around 15 percent of the 170 employees in Brandon.
Pfizer says it appreciates the long-standing record of service of PMU ranchers and employees in Brandon.
The cuts leave around 25 ranchers with contracts.
