29 candidates vying for Laurel Festival Queen

Talena truitt WELLSBORO - Twenty-nine high school seniors will compete for the title of Pennsylvania State Laurel Festival Queen during the 68th festival this weekend.

Amanda Sidelinger of St. Mary's will return to crown her successor Saturday night after she reigns over the weekend's activities involving candidates representing high schools from throughout the state.

She will relinquish her crown at the coronation ceremony at 8 p.m. at the high school auditorium where Tioga County Commissioner Mark Hamilton will assist in crowning the new queen.

Amanda is the daughter of Randolph and Debra Sidelinger of St. Marys.

She is a student at Penn State University, majoring in chemical engineering.

As Laurel Queen, she was the recipient of a $1,000 educational scholarship and has participated in speaking engagements and parades.

While here, the Laurel Queen candidates will enjoy a full weekend of activities, including concerts, a tour of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon and the annual Laurel Parade.

Candidates will be welcomed to the community in a ceremony at noon on Friday, on the porch of the TCDC Building, 114 Main St.

At 7:30 that evening, the candidates will formally introduce themselves at the Queens Preview-Concert, which takes place at the high school auditorium.

Featured entertainment is by Grass Stained Genes, a local bluegrass band favorite.

Tickets for the concert or the coronation ceremony will be available at the Chamber of Commerce or at the door.

This year's candidates are:

Chrissy Candelora, Mount Carmel Area High School, is the daughter of Dianne and Tony Candelora. She played basketball and volleyball, participated in Science Club, Science Olympiad, Envirothon, marching, jazz and symphonic bands, Chemistry Club, Forensics Club and Interact Club. She was in the school operetta and has been active in many community and church events. She has earned numerous academic and athletic awards. She plans to attend college to study biology and pre-dentistry and minor in music.

Megan Danley, Warrior Run High School, is the daughter of Wade and Sharon Danley. She has been a member of Tri-Hi-Y, Outdoor Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Key Club, French Club, choir, and served her class as an officer. She has played golf and softball, and was a student athletic trainer. She was named to the National Honor Society, was on the distinguished honor roll and was an assistant Little League coach. She plans to attend Misericordia University to study nursing.

Breanne Eisenhardt, Liberty High School, is the daughter of Jack and Jenny Lynn Eisenhardt. She has been a member of Sweet N Lows singing group, marching and jazz bands, county chorus, and the PMEA chorus festivals. She has been in Key Club, and played softball. She has earned awards in music, interior design and English. She recorded a CD and donated half the proceeds from its sale to the Liberty Food Bank, and has been involved with her church hand chime choir as well as Liberty 4-H Club. She plans to attend Mansfield University to major in music education and music performance.

Hillary Flook, South Williamsport Area High School, is the daughter of Donald Flook and Judy Doddato. She has played soccer and been a cheerleader. She has participated in Student Council, Family, Career and Community Leaders of America. Future Business Leaders of America, Teen Contact and has served her class as an officer. She was named to the National Honor Society. She plans to attend West Chester University majoring in business.

Sierra L. Gee, Cowanesque Valley High School, is the daughter of Annette Brace and Bruce Gee. She has participated in basketball and track and field. She has been a member of Letterman's Club and Prom Committee. She was named student of the month and earned high honors awards. She plans to attend Pennsylvania College of Technology to major in nursing.

Marissa Gummo, Montoursville Area High School, is the daughter of Sheri Ruffing and John Gummo. She has been active in student government, Students Against Destructive Decisions, History Club, Spanish Club, Key Club, Future Business Leaders of America, prom committee. She has participated in track and powder-puff football. She earned placement in the History Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society and helped with an after-school homework program for fifth graders. She plans to attend Susquehanna University to major in elementary education.

Rachelle Marie Harris, New Covenant Academy, Mansfield, is the daughter of Richard and Rhonda Harris. She has played volleyball, basketball and soccer and participated in track. She has been in Key Club and Worship Team and has served her class as an officer and on Student Council. She has earned several athletic awards. She plans to attend Bob Jones University to study nursing.

Quincey Sullivan Johnson, Bucktail Area High School, is the daughter of Dennis and Paula Johnson. She has participated in tennis, basketball, softball and Varsity Club. She has been a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions, Environmental Club, and has served her class as public relations officer. She has been named to the National Honor Society and has volunteered with her local fire company and the SPCA. She plans to attend Lock Haven University where she will study to become a registered nurse.

Alison Kirby, Canton Area High School, is the daughter of Ronald and Angela Kirby. She has been a member of senior high chorus, Yearbook I and II, Academic Letterman Club and Athletic Letterman Club. She has played softball and basketball and was the Northern Tier League Female Basketball Sportsmanship Award winner for 2009. She was named to the National Honor Society. She plans to attend college to major in speech-language pathology.

Kirsten Ley, Wellsboro Area High School, is the daughter of Herbert and Lorene Ley. She has participated in volleyball, track and Girls Sports Club. She has been in chorus, Connectors Plus Club, Science Trivia Club and Sports Medicine Club. She was a crossing guard and was named to the National Honor Society. She volunteered at a missions hospital in Bangladesh and has been active in other church projects. She plans to attend Geneva College to major in biology and speech therapy.

Jamie Martin, North Penn High School, Blossburg, is the daughter of Robert and Sandra Martin. She has played tennis and earned most improved tennis player award. She has served her class on Student Council and participated in the certified nursing assistant program at Pennsylvania College of Technology. She was named to the National Honor Society and has been involved with community and church volunteer projects. She plans to spend one year in YES missions program and then attend college.

Danielle Myers, Sullivan County High School, is the daughter of Linwood and Maureen Myers. She has participated in reading competition, band, marching band, Future Business Leaders of America and Science Club. She has played soccer, been named to the National Honor Society and has earned other academic and music awards. She plans to attend a four-year college.

Sadie Lynn Christian Parsons, Galeton Area High School, is the daughter of Gretchen and James Douglass. She has been a member of band, chorus, Art Club, Suicide Prevention Club, Audio-Video Club and Drama Club. She has served her class as a member of Student Council. She has played softball and earned the National Physical Fitness Award. She has been named to the honor roll and earned the Reader of the Year award. She plans to attend Edinboro University to major in art with a concentration in photography.

Kasey Ray Phillips, Central Mountain High School, is the daughter of Richard and Kandy Phillips. She has been manager for basketball and wrestling. She has served her class as an officer and on Student Council. She was a member of Model U.N. and Key Club. She has participated in the dual enrollment program through Lock Haven University and was named to the National Honor Society. She has completed more than 250 hours of community service during the past year. She plans to attend Penn State University to major in elementary education.

Alexis Elizabeth Ramsey, Cameron County High School, is the daughter of Mark and Mary Ramsey. She played basketball and volleyball and been a member of band front. She has helped with homecoming activities and been involved with fundraising for band front and Spanish Club. She has helped with the voting polls and served as a Spanish Club tutor. She was named to the National Honor Society and the Spanish Honor Society and has been active as a community volunteer. She plans to attend Clarion University to major in pre-elementary education.

Cortney Rishel, Jersey Shore Area High School, is the daughter of Todd and Jennifer Rishel. She has served her class as a member of the Class of 2009 Committee and on Student Council. She has participated in Key Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Prom Committee, and Model U.N. She played soccer and tennis. She has been on the distinguished honor roll and in the National Honor Society and has been a community volunteer. She plans to attend either Bloomsburg University or Liberty University to study business education.

Taylor Jordan Schoch, Montgomery Area High School, is the daughter of Keith Schoch and Gail Rupert. She has participated in chorus, Future Business Leaders of America, prom committee, venison roast committee and yearbook committee. She has played tennis and basketball and been a cheerleader. She was named to the National Honor Society and has earned athletic awards. She has been a volunteer at Sunny Brook Meadows riding stables and with middle school girls basketball. She plans to attend college to study biology-animal science with the goal of becoming a veterinarian.

Brittany Shelley, Smethport Area High School, is the daughter of John and Jackie Shelley. She has been in marching band, concert band, choir, show choir and jazz band. She has served her class as a member of Student Council. She has participated in French Club, Varsity "S" Club, golf, cross country, and basketball. She was selected to perform in IU9 band and district band. She has been active in 4-H Club and placed in many 4-H and open horse shows. She was in charge of a canned food drive and has volunteered at local senior centers. She plans to attend a four year college to study nursing.

Helen Shoemaker, Hughesville High School, is the daughter of Dean Shoemaker and Barbara-Jo Shoemaker. She has participated in Lady Spartan soccer and track and field. She has been in band, chorus, girls ensemble and jazz band. She was a member of French Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Track Club, and the semi-formal committee. She has earned varsity athletic letters and has been on the honor roll throughout high school. She plans to attend Shippensburg University to study finance and accounting.

Hillary Simpson, Mansfield High School, is the daughter of Kress and Tammy Simpson. She has been in band and participated in the Wilderness Experience Program. She was manager of the girls soccer team and a cheerleader for the basketball and football teams. She has volunteered at Mansfield's Fabulous 1890s Weekend and at the elementary school. She plans to attend Mansfield University to major in elementary education and earn a second certification in special education.

Brianna Soars, Loyalsock Township High School, is the daughter of Blair and Jean Anne Soars. She has participated in soccer and basketball. She was a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions, Christian Club, Big Brothers and Sisters program and prom committee. She served her class as public relations officer and on Student Council. She has been on the honor roll and has earned several sports awards. She plans to attend Susquehanna University to major in clinical psychology and play soccer.

Talena Truitt, East Juniata High School, is the daughter of Audie Truitt and Sharon Truitt. She has participated in field hockey, softball, basketball and cheerleading. She was in the junior class play and the senior class musical. She served her class as an officer and a member of Model U.N., yearbook committee and Tobacco Busters. She has earned athletic awards and has been a community volunteer. She plans to attend Mansfield University to play field hockey and major in psychology.

Marissa Warriner, Northern Potter High School, is the daughter of Ronald and Nancy Warriner. She has participated in cross country, track and field, basketball and Varsity Club. She has been a member of Future Farmers of America, Future Business Leaders of America, Pennsylvania Dairy Princess Promotional Services, Foreign Language Club, Biology Club and the Busted! drug intervention program. She was the 2007-08 Potter County Dairy Princess and participated in the state dairy princess pageant. She has earned numerous athletic awards and logged 175 hours of community service for her work at a camp for special needs children. She plans to attend the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, then transfer to the Academy of Art University.

Layci Watts, Williamson High School, is the daughter of William and Kathy Watts. She has been in band, Stand Tall, Ski Club and has served her class as an officer. She has played volleyball and softball and was the wrestling manager and bookkeeper. She was in the Youth Leadership program, Student Council, and was named to the National Honor Society. She has earned numerous academic and athletic awards and has donated time to a local softball team. She plans to attend Lock Haven University to study athletic training.

Jannelle Weller, Shippensburg Area Senior High School, is the daughter of Allen Weller and Linda Weller. She has participated in field hockey, earning a letter for that sport and serving as team captain. She has been in band, Key Club, Student Forum and Students Against Destructive Decisions. She was named to the National Honor Society and was selected as 2008 homecoming queen. She plans to attend Shippensburg University to major in elementary education and minor in special education.

Bridget Whalen, Elkland Area High School, is the daughter of Matthew Whalen and Elaine Jacob. She has participated in tennis, cheerleading, track, Outdoors Club and Fly Fishing Club. She has been in band, chorus, reading team, Drama Club and the school to work program. She has served her class on Student Council and has attended high adventure camps and Odyssey of the Mind events. She has been active in her church. She plans to join the Air Force National Guard and attend Mansfield University majoring in business.

Shelby Lynn Whitebread, Berwick Area High School, is the daughter of Dennis and Robin Whitebread. She has been active in numerous community service activities throughout her high school years. She has been a member of the National Honor Society and has served her class as an officer and a member of Student Council. She has been in Key Club, Snowball Committee, French Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions. She is participating in a dual enrollment program with Luzerne County Community College. She plans to attend Monmouth University in New Jersey to major in marine and environmental biology and minor in physics.

Brittany Wilson, Troy Area High School, is the daughter of Richard and Sheila Wilson. She has played softball and soccer, served as captain of those teams and earned numerous athletic awards. She has been on Student Council and served her class as an officer. She has been in Drama Club, Letterman's Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions, Interact Community Service Club, German Club, Mansfield University Student Travel Club and LEO Club. She has been named to the National Honor Society and was on the high honor roll. She has been a volunteer for various community events. She plans to attend college and pursue a career as a physician assistant.

Lindsey Wittlich, Muncy High School, is the daughter of James and Lori Wittlich. She has been a cheerleader and participated in track and field. She was in Theater Club, Blue Arrowhead and Students Against Destructive Decisions. She was named to the National Honor Society and was student of the month and accountant of the month. She plans to attend Penn State-Altoona campus.
