This student is just one of many crashing in the Albertson Library. According to Saltzer Medical Group, between 50-150 million Americans suffer from a sleep disorder. However, less than 5 percent are diagnosed and treated. March 1 - 8 was National Sleep Awareness Week. Anywhere from 50 - 150 million Americans have a sleep disorder, while less than 5 percent are diagnosed.

There are several forms of sleep disorders including insomnia, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea and narcolepsy. Untreated sleep disorders may lead to psychiatric problems, diabetes, memory loss, and other problems.

In 2004 the American Academy of Sleep Medicine reported that NFL player Reggie White died due to complications from a sleep disorder.

According to Dr. Mark Rasmus, medical director of Idaho Sleep Health, indicators of sleep disorders are difficulty getting to or staying asleep and drowsiness. Students may have difficulty sustaining attention at work or in class, and they may feel tired most days. Some other signs include irritability and struggling to breathe or stopping breathing while asleep. Other signs are acid indigestion, especially at night; morning headache or not feeling refreshed after a night's sleep. Some doctors even predict snoring to be a future indicator of sleep disorders.

According to Dr. Vincent Serio, director of Medical Services at BSU, the most frequent sleep disorder is insomnia. The most rare type is narcolepsy (falling asleep without any warning).

"Most college students will have some problem with sleep during their tenure," Serio said.

"I think my sleeping habits could be better," he said. " Due to homework and stress and relationships I don't have time to sleep."

University Health Services recommends students use good sleep habits. These include consistency in going to bed and waking up at the same time, eliminating any types of distractions like reading books or watching TV, avoiding caffeine and alcohol in the afternoon and evening, and not exercising at night.

A good night's sleep is hard to get - its easy to trade sleep for just about anything else - work, or fun. it is a big deal though if you make a habit of not sleeping enough. (Continued ) The Arbiter Online, All Rights Reserved
