Cached About 15 years ago, his uncle's condition worsened, forcing him to get surgery for esophageal cancer, but died from complications of the surgery.

It's pretty typical, he says, human nature, even. You're in pain, but you learn to tolerate the symptoms. By the time you give his office a call, things have gotten pretty bad.

Acid reflux disease and heartburn were the topic of this month's Healthline, which is sponsored by South Jersey Healthcare and The Daily Journal.

Readers are invited to fax or e-mail questions on the monthly topic, but no questions were submitted this month.

Dr. McLaughlin, a gastroenterologist with the Gastroenterology Group of South Jersey based in Vineland, said about a quarter of all his patients are dealing with some form of acid reflux disease.

Acid reflux is the troublesome flow of the acid content from the stomach into the esophagus.

Symptoms include a burning sensation in the upper abdomen, hoarseness, laryngitis and reoccurring ear infections.

Untreated acid reflux can get pretty ugly, he said, leading to such conditions as ulcers, a change in the lining of the esophagus and even esophageal cancer, which has a five-year survival rate of 5 to 10 percent.

"People who aren't treating it are developing these symptoms," he said.

It's a shame, he said, because this is a problem that can be treated if properly diagnosed.

"Frankly, I regard it as human nature," he said of those who wait too long to address the problem. "I try not to get frustrated at it. I'm not emotional. It's a shame."

The typical acid reflux sufferer is a middle-aged white male who has gained a little weight and is less active. He's anywhere from age 30 to 50, drinking more caffeine, is under a good amount of stress and working long hours.

"They've had (the problem) for a long period of time, so they've learned to live with it," he said. "They're taking Tums every day and they're doing what they're doing. They need to get proper evaluation and treatment."

It's better to face the problem now rather than deal with the ugly consequences, he said.

"Ninety to 95 percent of patients with esophageal cancer will be dead in five years," he said.
