Betty Karnes of Lake O' the Pines works on a crossword puzzle as she sits next to one of her husband's late model Ford pickup trucks during the annual Jefferson Fire Brigade Benefit Car Show hosted by the Lions Club of Jefferson Saturday.
She sang her first solo at age 3, sharing a message of love through Barney's "I Love You" theme song.
Now, at age 18, former Marshall High School homecoming queen Bre'Ana Flanagan will be making her debut, sharing a message of inspiration through her own original songs, tonight, at her concert billed "Bre'Ana Flanagan Live!"
"I'm nervous, but I'm not scared," Miss Flanagan, daughter of Kenneth and Kimberly Flanagan, said of her debut.
"I'm just going to be presenting some of my original pieces," she said of what's in store for tonight.
"I have a lot of songs that I've written that I've never just sung to anyone, so I'm just going to be presenting those."
The concert, hosted at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, will feature local recording artist Trisha Green, Joanie Paley, D. Crowder and T. Muse. It will begin at 7 p.m.
"I'm definitely excited," said Miss Flanagan, who will be an incoming freshman at Texas Women's University this fall. She will be heading off to college next week.
With encouragement from her mother, she decided to put on a concert to share her gift at her church with the public before she leaves.
"If God blesses you with something, it's not for you to keep to yourself," she said. "You have to share it with the world because more than likely he gave it to you to share with someone, to be a blessing to someone else."
The teenager has been singing all of her life, mostly in the church, and accompanying her mother, a musician.
"Me and her normally do our little duet thing together," she said.
Growing up in the church, Miss Flanagan learned to become multi-talented with her vocal chords, singing wherever needed. She switches mainly between soprano and alto, however, "I sing it all."
Through the years, she's honed her craft by grasping every opportunity to sing.
"I sing at church and whenever I'm invited to sing, I sing," she said.
The songbird has been blessed to sing at local and national events including the annual MLK celebration and the National Baptist Convention in Detroit, Mich., and in Houston. She's also sung in several groups including with Trini Green and a group of friends called "The United Worshippers."
"We just kind of sing together at different places so it's exciting," she said.
"It's always an experience whenever I'm able to sing somewhere," she added. "I consider it a blessing."
Miss Flanagan considers music her get-away and loves finding comfort and inspiration through song.
"If I have a stressful day, even though I can't play the piano, I just sit down and just start playing something," she giggled, "and sing and I feel better. So, it's my stress reliever."
She listens to anything inspirational and absorbs all she can from those who inspire her. Being able to pen her own songs and deliver them is refreshing.
"It's relief because a lot of my songs I don't just sit down and say, 'OK, I'm going to write a song today,'" she said. "A lot of times it comes from something, it comes from maybe something I'm going through or maybe my pastor want to talk to me about something and God just give me a song to write, maybe to encourage somebody."
Her ultimate goal is "to change lives" - "to be an inspiration to someone," she said.
"I'm going to school for nursing, but I wanted to do singing on the side just to kind of get my music out there," she said. "I really feel like within my music is a message for the people and I just kind of want to be able to minister to the people through my music."
"You're never too far from God," is one message she strives to convey. "The door is always open."
She hopes all will have a blessed night tonight as she shares her love for the Lord through song.
"I've been praying about it, so I know it's going to be an awesome night, so come on out and be encouraged," she said. "Just come experience the mercy of God."
May GOD continue to bless her and her family. I pray that this will encourage the younger generation to seek positive, more constructive things to do with their time and talent, instead of trying to keep up with "the ways of the world"..
