Flower essences is my favorite holistic modality to practice. Within a flower essence session, clients entrust me with their personal stories, as well as their short and long-term goals and aspirations.
Dr. Edward Bach was the founder of the practice of flower essences. A leading English surgeon, bacteriologist and pathologist responsible for original research into vaccines, Dr. Bach was ridiculed by his colleagues for his pursuit of less tangible practices such as flower essences. Nevertheless, Dr. Bach was unwavering in his belief that remedies gentler than pharmaceuticals existed, namely among the most highly developed part of a plant - its flowers - by which patients could bring themselves back into balance. Dr. Bach was so inspired by his vocation that he abandoned his lucrative private practice in 1930 to concentrate upon his true life work. Dr. Bach died in 1936, leaving behind a legacy of insightful information that has fuelled my passion today. (For more information on Dr. Edward Bach, please visit The Bach Centre at bachcentre.com.)
Flower essences are energetic in nature, meaning that there are no plant chemicals in a flower essence remedy. The key word here is 'essence'. It is the essence of the plant that is being ingested - not a root, leaf, stem or seed, but an essence. On dictionary.com, one of the definitions of "essence" is: "a substance obtained from a plant, drug, or the like, by distillation, infusion, etc., and containing its characteristic properties in concentrated form." Characteristic properties refer to the nature and true substance of the flowers. Consider when you're feeling overwhelmed: while an herbal preparation containing plant chemicals can address the physicality of migraines, for example, a flower essence preparation can address the emotional, mental and spiritual components of feeling overwhelmed. I think of a flower essence remedy as a counsellor in a bottle. Part of a counsellor's job is to diplomatically point out our blind spots; parts about ourselves that we are unaware of. Drawing mental attention to the things that we don't know we're thinking, believing or doing allows us to have a different perspective and to see how these thoughts, beliefs or behaviours are and have been self-defeatist in nature. With new knowledge, we are able to implement change that will influence our lives in a more positive direction.
The practice of flower essences is a celebration of the way plants lend themselves to each human condition. The celebration part happens when we ingest an essence with respect for both the process we are undertaking, and the facilitation of this process by said essence. A successful flower essence cycle brings change, leading us toward our highest expression of ourselves. When we are expressing ourselves at the height of who it is we truly want to be, we are likely expressing self-confidence, gratitude, abundance, prosperity, happiness, compassion and empathy. Surely, this is an expression worth celebrating.
Specifically, I have applied flower essences to the following situations: death and loss, grief, intensity of emotion related to abuse, manipulation, transition in moving, change of job or relationship, holding on to the past, childhood trauma, bitterness, resentment, emotional co-dependence, hyper sensitivity, feeling the need for approval, low self-esteem, overwhelm, broken heartedness, to name only a very few examples.
