LOS ANGELES It is strange to say but the Clippers probably are ready to get away from Staples Center because home cooking has been anything but sweet.
Squandering a first-half 11-point lead with another one of their third-quarter meltdowns, the Clippers lost for the sixth consecutive time on their home floor, falling 80-77 Tuesday night to the Toronto Raptors, in front of 14,455.
"That's been a tough story for us lately,'' Clippers guard Dan Dickau said, referring to yet another night when the Clippers have struggled in the third quarter. "I wish we knew exactly what to put the finger on it. Whether it's giving up offensive rebounds, not passing the ball out of a double team, bad defensive rotation...It seems to be a number of different things.''
Counting the loss last Sunday to the Lakers, when the Clippers were the designated road team, and they now have lost seven consecutive games in this building.
Toronto shot just 37.5 percent from the floor and even though their All-Star forward Chris Bosh scored a game-high 24 points, it came on a 6 of 22 field-goal shooting performance. Bosh buttressed it by making 12 of 16 free-throw tries.
In defending against the Raptors, the NBA's leader in 3-point shooting, Dunleavy said the defensive choices are difficult because the options are either to send help into the post, which would leave a perimeter shooter open or not help and be faced with the difficult task of stopping Toronto's post players, like Bosh, with a single defender.
"You're always caught in between,'' he said. "It's like the Three Bears...it has to be just right. Can't be too cold or too
That frigid shooting night by the visitors in most cases would have resulted in a victory for the Clippers. But fortunes have not gone the Clippers way, especially at home, where they haven't won since Nov. 21, when they beat Denver.
"Nine times out of 10, you would win,'' Clippers forward Tim Thomas said. "But it's been tough for us, lately.''
Clippers center Chris Kaman chalked up another double-double, with 12 points and 16 rebounds but he only made 5 of 15 shots, missing a great quantity of attempts that he typically makes.
"We did not get a lot out of our post game tonight,'' Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said.
Corey Maggette led the Clippers with 22 points but his 7-of-17 effort from the field mirrored the team's struggles. The Clippers overall shot 39 percent and reduced their offensive chances by committing 17 turnovers.
"I was very limited in what I could do,'' said Thomas, who scored 10 points while playing on a tender right ankle.
The Clippers did get a big lift from recently-signed guard Richie Frahm, who made his first career start due to Cuttino Mobley being out with a stomach virus.
Frahm buried a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter, then tried to rally the Clippers in the fourth quarter with some long-range shooting. But his 13-point contribution was not enough.
The Texas tango could not come too soon for the Clippers, despite the formidable foes they face in back-to-back games Friday and Saturday at Dallas and at San Antonio.
"We just need to get better, starting with me,'' Maggette said. "But we will get better. We just have to fix a few things and get everyone on the right page.''
Blurred lines
With the plethora of injuries that have stricken the Clippers, Dunleavy was asked if it was difficult to distinguish between his first and second units.
"I've got 1 1/2 units,'' he said. "Bottom line is, I talk with the guys about using this as an opportunity to get better.
"We're looking and experimenting with different guys, to see if anything works for us.''
More hurt
Backup forward-center Aaron Williams took a nasty spill in practice Monday that apparently was more serious than originally thought.
Williams was ruled out of Tuesday's game because of a strained left wrist.
