Preeclampsia can be detected in early pregnancy by 14 metabolic markers

One of the leading causes of maternal death during pregnancy is preeclampsia which threatens the life of both mother and child.
The condition starts in the early stages of pregnancy with defective development of the placenta and mostly the symptoms are not revealed until the second half of the pregnancy.
A team of international standard has found a combination of sophisticated emerging technologies and data analysis which may identify 14 simple metabolites with high accuracy.
They claim that this combination can detect the problem in the early stages of pregnancy in women who face the chances of developing preeclampsia in later pregnancy.
Although there is no test available till date but experts affirm the finding to have greater importance. The trial conducted internationally was called SCOPE (Screening for Pregnancy Endpoints) and was undertaken on almost 7,000 women with first-time pregnancies.
Louise C. Kenny, M.D., Ph.D., the study lead and professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Anu Research Center, University College Cork, in Cork, Ireland, added, "Everything we know about this condition suggests women do not become sick and present with preeclampsia until late in pregnancy, but the condition originates in early pregnancy."
