(WTOL) - These days a pregnant woman can find out if she's having a boy or girl way before the baby arrives. Now, the manufacturer of a new DNA screening claims it can pinpoint the gender of a child only a few weeks into the pregnancy.
Kerri Richmond found out she was having a girl with a traditional ultrasound, but she says she would have jumped at the chance to find out her baby's sex before then.
"The sooner, the better for me," she said. "I wanted to set up everything in advance, make it as girly or boy as possible."
She also had time to pick out a name and nickname for her daughter-to-be. She's going to name her Evelyn Grace, Evie for short.
The Consumer Genetics Pink or Blue Gender Test promises to let women know whether they're having a boy or a girl, as early as seven weeks into their pregnancy.
Kerri is one of two women invited to take the test who already knew their baby's sex. Molly Balfour is the other. Including their pink and blue results would help establish a non-scientific baseline for accuracy.
Consumer Genetics claims the test is accurate 95% of the time. The other three volunteers recruited for were early into their pregnancies. Megan Dupuy was 14 weeks. Aimee Goodson and Karen Green were both nine weeks.
"We got to hear the heartbeat about two weeks ago and so, that made it seem real, but having a sex to it is just kinda, makes it feel a lot more real," said Dupuy.
"It doesn't matter to me if I have a girl or a boy, I just want a healthy baby," said Green. "This is my first pregnancy, so I'm just excited."
Producer Angelle Dupre explained to the women as a group how the test worked, but each one took the test individually. It involved three steps: a finger prick, blood collection, and then blotting the blood onto a card until three circles were full. To make sure there was no sample contamination, the table the volunteers were sitting at was disinfected after every use.
"The way the Pink or Blue Test works is by detecting small amounts of male DNA in the woman's blood," said Anna Vitebsky with Consumer Genetics. "So, the only way she would have male DNA in her blood is if she's pregnant with a baby boy."
That's why no men are allowed near the woman when's she's taking the test. A simple cough could get male DNA in the air and contaminate the sample, putting the accuracy of the test in question.
Once the test is completed and mailed to Consumer Genetics, the results are available online or by email in three to five days.
