Re: "Sick joke shouldn't be OK," by Gary Schornick, Sunday Letters.

Dave Letterman has so far gotten by with causing mental anguish for the 14-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Todd Palin. The father or the mother, and especially not a child, don't need to be made the brunt of a liberal TV comic.

If Letterman had insulted President Barack Obama's daughters or his wife, I'm sure that the president would be asking for his head on a platter.

Didn't Letterman recently get married to a live-in girlfriend whom he got pregnant (a much kinder word than knocked-up), who bore him a son who is now 4 or 5 years old? I graduated from high school in 1958, and children born to unwed mothers were known as illegitimate.

... or Palin family appearances

David Letterman's joke about the Palin's daughter was unfortunate, and he has admitted it. But when Sarah Palin starts slinging wild accusations of child exploitation (Letterman is now apparently a dangerous sexual predator) she needs to look inward and accept that she exploited two underage kids as virtual props during the campaign.

Reasonable and caring people differ profoundly on the abortion question, but calling excessive attention to two children -- one with an unplanned pregnancy and one with serious developmental challenges -- to emphasize that you would keep children others might not calls into question whose interests Palin was looking out for.

... should make people stand up

What makes comedians, celebrity or politicians think that it is acceptable to abuse young girls? Oh, I forgot these are conservative young girls.

I can't imagine President Obama's beautiful daughters being treated in such a way by the mainstream media types. Then, Letterman said it wasn't Willow Palin (she was the one at the game) he was talking about, but her older sister, Bristol. How in the world does that make it better?

I guess for me what was even more despicable was the audience's laughter. What have we come to in the U.S., a country that supposedly supports women's rights? Do we have any moral standards left? It's time people stand up against such filth.

Obama used his daughters as props just as much as Palin did. To be more precise, Palin's daughter was broughtn into the limelight not by Palin, but by the media that was trying to discredit her. Only after Bristol's plight was splashed all over the world did Sarah bring her daughter into the public in an effort to not appear as hiding her reality.

I don't even pay attention to Obama and his daughters, yet I am aware of their names, their appearance, their preferences, their vacation photos, their schools, and their grandmother.
Apparently, the Obama family is also using the daughters as political props.

It's an embarassingly blatant double-standard, and only partisan fanatics would defend it as justified.

Last September, a skit on Saturday Night Live suggested incest in the Palin family. "What about the husband?" asked a mock Times reporter. "You know he's doing those daughters. I mean, come on. It's Alaska!" No outrage. Sarah Palin appeared on the show one month later in late October.

Days after the announcement of Bristol's pregnancy, Conan O'Brien joked, "It's true, John McCain's running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, has revealed that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant. Palin said, 'We should never have introduced her to John Edwards.'" Where was the outrage? Was Conan promoting infidelity with an underage girl?

From two different Tonight Shows: "Governor Palin announced over the weekend that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant. Oh, boy, you thought John Edwards was in trouble before, now he's really done it!" AND..."All the Republicans are heaping praise on Governor Palin. Fred Thompson said, as an actor, he could see them making a movie about Sarah Palin and her family. Didn't they already make that movie? I think it was called 'Knocked Up!'"--Jay Leno

Craig Ferguson's skit of "Larry King vs Levi Johnston" asks about "kinky sex" with the drapes open. Craig Ferguson's honorary Alaska citizenship, granted by Governor Palin wasn't rescinded.

"According to expense reports, Sarah Palin charged the state of Alaska over $21,000 for her children to travel with her on official business. In fairness to Gov. Palin, when she leaves them home alone they get pregnant." --Seth Meyers (SNL). Sarah Palin was in a sketch with Meyers a week earlier.

October 8, 2008, Sarah Palin walked out on the ice with six year old Piper and 13 year old Willow, before the game, Conan O'Brien said, "Saturday night, Sarah Palin is going to drop the first puck at the Philadelphia Flyers' hockey game. Then Palin will spend the rest of the game trying to keep the hockey players out of her daughter's penalty box."
Oh, yes he did. You get the outrage...but not a peep then. According to the new "logic", O'Brien was advocating for some really sick stuff.

I love this logic:

During the campaign, as is customary for all candidates, Palin put her family on stage. Biden, Obama, and McCain all did this. Bush did this. Every president in the modern TV era does this. But when she does it, it

She goes to the game with her daughter, who is 14. Later that night, Letterman says her daughter gets knocked up at this same game by A-Rod. He's inferring that those Palin girls are all about getting laid and knocked up. Then they'll be forced to keep their babies by their abstinence-preaching pro-life backwards hick mother - that was the joke.

When confronted over the appallingly bad joke, he invokes the LAMEST defense. Um, er, somehow we are all supposed to realize that he wasn't referring to the 14-year-old at all, but to Bristol, who wasn't even there.

Yeah right.

What's more shocking is that it's now proper form in the US, that beacon of feminism (NOT) for media personalities to attack women, girls, any female that appears on stage, and make sexually degrading remarks about them. And when those women push back, and say, hey that's not right...they get told they're shrill, irrelevant, and hey, can't you take a joke?

Hey, Maryanne?
You got a daughter?
Do any of your friends have daughters?

Better watch out! They're the next victims of this kind of attitude. Of course, if that doesn't matter to you, don't worry about this stuff.

"One awkward moment for Michelle Obama at the Yankee game," Letterman said, "during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez." WOW! What a knee-slapper. That is hysterical. Get it Maryanne?
