A recent study conducted by Harvard University has ranked Utah the number-one state in the country for online porn subscriptions.
The release of this study has caused a huge uproar on local news websites and forums. However, the comments made may surprise you. It seems Utah does not want to accept this study and feels it is merely the liberal media's attempt to attack religious conservatives. Some have even blamed Prop 8 backlashes.
It seems whenever Utah ranks highly in commendable categories, such as the lowest underage drinking and DUI ranking in the country, the religious right takes credit. However if the state ranks highly in less desirable categories, nonmembers or faulty data collection is to blame.
Whether you are a church going member of the LDS faith means nothing unless you live its principals, abide by the law and make some common sense decisions.
Currently Utah has a rape rate 15 percent higher than the national average and is currently ranked 17, according to diasastercenter.com and justice.utah.gov. Were all of those rapists atheists? Maybe they were homosexuals? No, the fact is they were Utahns. Regardless of the race, sexual orientation or religious affiliation of those involved, it's clear Utah has an issue.
As opposed to pointing fingers, we could educate teens how to stay safe. We could talk about sex in a respectful manner in high school instead of ignoring it. I think we can all agree sex education in high schools is a much better alternative than hardcore online pornography.
Of states ranked by the prevalence and seriousness of depression, Utah was right on top while South Dakota, Hawaii and surprisingly New Jersey were at the bottom.
More Utahns take Prozac-style drugs than in any other state, according to a study conducted in June 2007 by Express Scripts, a pharmacy benefit management firm. The study indicated that Utah residents average 1.1 prescriptions per person per year of medication such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil, while national average is 0.7 per person per year.
