It has been reported that Prince Harry has turned to hypnotherapy in a last-ditch attempt to stop smoking. Apparently the prince has been following the advice laid out in the program created by celebrity hypnotherapist Paul McKenna and has been impressed by his progress so far.
Harry first started smoking while at expensive boarding school Eton when he was 14. Since then, his addiction has escalated and friends said that by the time he was enrolled in the RAF pilot training program, he was on 20 a day.
He managed to stop smoking for a year, but it seems that a combination of work-related pressure, exam stress and the trauma of his public break-up with heiress Chelsea Davy last year has pushed him over the edge. He was recently pictured puffing away at the wedding of friend Nicholas van Cutsem.
He was given Paul McKenna"s book by a friend, and a source said that it appeals to him because it is all about helping you "retrain your mind." The insider added, "Harry knows that it doesn't look good to younger people who look up to him. He is really trying to quit."
Paul McKenna is well known for helping celebrities with their addictions and his clients are said to include Rolling Stone rake Ronnie Wood and Madonna"s ex-husband, the film director Guy Ritchie. His book Quit Smoking Now has received a lot of endorsements.
Hypnotherapy is well known to be one tactic with which many have successfully quit smoking. Other popular smoking cessation techniques include nicotine replacement therapies, such as nicotine gums, inhalants and patches, and the drugs Champix and Zyban.
Hypnotherapy is seen more as an "alternative" therapy, along with acupuncture, unlike Champix or NRT which have been clinically trialled and are known to work. The NHS recommends that smokers are many times more likely to successfully stop smoking if they accept support and use some kind of smoking cessation therapy rather than try and do it cold turkey.
It is not known whether Prince Harry has already used other smoking cessation tools like NRT or Champix.
He is said to be extremely disappointed with himself for falling off the wagon but has been under pressure recently, leading to the slip up. Palace insiders say that Prince Charles was shocked when he discovered that his son was a smoker and does not understand why he started, as he himself as never been tempted.
A friend of Paul McKenna told News of the World that the famous hypnotist would be more than happy to meet with the Prince in person if he thought that would give him an extra boost in trying to stop smoking.
