CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Proposed rules that would allow more modern dust monitors in U.S. coal mines may be delayed by President Barack Obama's order requiring federal agencies to halt pending regulations while his administration reviews them.
Mine Safety and Health Administration spokeswoman Amy Louviere says the U.S. Department of Labor is working to identify rules affected by the directive and take necessary action.
MSHA proposed the coal dust monitor rule Jan. 16, four days before Obama took office. The proposal would set new criteria for government regulators to use when approving personal dust monitors for coal mines.
The industry now relies on 1970s vintage technology, which the government wants to replace.
Coal dust is a big issue in mining because it can cause black lung disease.

My concerns are that people are already saying that he is on the right track and he has only been in office 2 days, and it doesnt matter how good of president he is in the eyes of the liberals and the eyes of evey african american he will always be the best because of his views on liberalism and that he is a black man lets go back to what this country was founded on. And it was founded on the word of God. I didnt vote for this man not because of his color but because of the views that he stands for,but he is OUR president so I will pray that God will speak to his heart concerning our country and that God will guide him in the direction that this country needs to go. Secondly, the majority of people on here just PROVE why West Virginia has a bad reputation. The spelling and grammar on here is atrocious, and the small-mindedness is even worse. It's like you're trying to brag "Oh MY people were more repressed," "No, it was MY people who were..." Guess what, most of you, myself included, who are part Native American, look like every other white person walking around. You personally are not discriminated against (unless it's because of your lack of education). Whether you want to believe it or not, minorities ARE still discriminated against every day. I'm not saying everyone discriminates against them, but yes, some people are ignorant enough to judge someone by the color of their skin instead of the content of their character. Posted By: Lisa: To Joe, I couldn't agree more with you! I started watching some of the inaugeration and got so turned off by the media making a huge thing about race. And then for so many of the ones they interviewed would talk about what this would mean to their forefathers. I am SICK to death about hearing about how "oppressed" the blacks are...it isn't our fault what happened to their forefathers! I am so against and sorry for what happened to them, but IT IS NOT MY FAULT! As a matter of fact MY forefathers (Cherokee and Choctaw) were MORE oppressed and are still the MOST mistreated. Some would say even should have the most rights since they were here first..but i don't agree..i think ALL should be equal..REGARDLESS. So until we come to a point where the Native American has equality in ALL things we as a nation are failing the ones we owe the most too! Joe, if you start an alumni consider me joined! It was carried out with much consideration for all Americans, and with a sense of class and dignity that I've not known to be put forth by any political event. Aside the obvious historical "firsts" for this President,it is the hope that America is again moving forward that makes this a gleeful celebration. It is hard for me to fathom that someone of my own age is now the President; but in knowing this, it is a comfort as he has experienced my generation firsthand, and can see the mistakes of the past no longer have to keep us from a better future. Of course he is only a man, and he will make mistakes not unlike others before him. Let us each examine ourselves to see what positive changes choices we can make to keep America what we know it to be - the best country on earth; Land of the Free and home of the Brave. This sent a whirl of emotions running within me as it suggested defiance at the inauguration of my President. I voted for Barack Obama, I am proud of that fact, and it gives me great pride to know that the majority of people in this country have made a conscious effort to view mankind irrelevant of color. There is no honor in supporting the issues of the old South, and there can be no claim of Christianity by those who support the condemnation of mankind because of race. I find great pleasure knowing that those with this asinine way of thinking are now becoming a minority.
