Laps For Life Raises Funds For Charity

During the 2008-2009 school year, Garden City high school student Daniel Beecher established a charity called 'Laps for Life'. Daniel organized several high school athletes to help raise funds for the non-profit charity called the FOCOS Group, led by Dr. Boachie-Adjei, Chief of the Scoliosis Service at Hospital for Special Surgery. Each athlete ran 20 laps (5 miles), in order to raise the maximum amount of money pledged per lap by their sponsors. 100% of the donations were given to the FOCOS Group.
The Foundation for Orthopedics and Complex Spine is dedicated to providing orthopedic and spine care to underserved populations in developing nations, especially Ghana. There are only 12 orthopedic surgeons for 20 million Ghanaians. Just to give us some perspective - Nassau County alone has 146 orthopedic surgeons. The mission of FOCOS is to raise enough money to build a 30-bed orthopedic hospital in Ghana. Providing health care needs will improve quality of life and will save lives.
Daniel would like to thank the following high school students for their volunteer work: Kelly Johnston, Alex Morris, Ryan McAndrews, and Amy Shannon. Also, a great deal of appreciation should be extended to the wonderful friends and neighbors in Garden City who donated to 'Laps for Life'. Each generous donation brings the FOCOS charity one step closer to their goal.
