Aetna - Health Insurance , Dental , Pharmacy, Group Life and ... The cost of health insurance for Richmond city employees is again being scrutinized as the city tries to wrap up its 2011 budget.

According to Finance Director Melanie Allwood, the city's current plan is to budget an amount annually toward each employee's benefits. It's budgeted under 'health' benefits, but it will be up to employees themselves whether they choose health, dental or combination plans.

Currently, Allwood said what the city pays to provide employee health and dental benefits increases proportionally as insurance costs rise. She reported that the city presently pays either $4,160 toward individual-employee coverage or $7,448 toward family coverage, depending on what the employee chooses to carry.

Under the proposed fixed-amount plan, the city would set a yearly maximum. For fiscal year 2011, the maximum would be $4,200 toward what the city would pay toward an individual employee's health and/or dental benefits. The family-coverage ceiling would be $5,200, an additional $1,000 that Allwood considers a significant difference over what the city has paid in the past.

She also emphasized that it's an additional $1,000 in coverage, not a combination of the $4,200 single coverage and the $5,200 family coverage.
