Tri-State physicians are seeing a spike in patients with respiratory problems, and they say the weather is partly to blame.
Lungs feeling real tight and itchy eyes are symptoms doctors say they've been seeing a lot in recent weeks.
Dr. Steven Elliot of St. Mary's West Side Connection says those factors revolve around the unusually hot, dry weather.
Dr. Elliot says,"The fact that they're harvesting in September and October rather than in November, we have that compounding with the ragweed. Usually by the time they start harvesting ragweed season is over."
And there's been nothing dampen the dust.
Dr. Elliot says,"There's a lot of mold spores kicked up for example when they do the harvesting both beans and corn and without the rain to settle that down, it's more pervasive.
He says in some patients, especially those with compromised immune systems, that leads to a secondary bacterial infection many are even coming down with pneumonia.
Usually this time of year he sees about one case every two weeks.
Dr. Elliot says,"Probably the last month, averaging four or five patients a week with documentable pneumonia, which is, again, very unusual for a non-winter time."
Dr. Elliot says anti-histamines can help. He says patients should see their doctors if they notice their symptoms get worse.
