People who prefer white rice to brown are losing out on a lot of nutrition. When white rice is produced it loses much of its fiber not to mention nutrients like B vitamins, manganese, phosphorus and iron. Brown rice, on the other hand, still has the bran intact so it has more fiber and nutrients than white rice. Nutritionally speaking, brown rice is a good choice (and, in my opinion it has more flavor, too). But move over brown rice now black rice is getting the nutritional accolades.

You've probably heard that, when it comes to fruits and vegetables, you should eat from all the different color groups. That's because produce from different color categories tend to be rich in different nutrients. Most red fruits and vegetables provide a healthy dose of lycopene, orange produce is often high in beta-carotene, etc. That natural coloring system is also what gives black rice its nutritional perks.

Like brown rice, black rice grains are kept largely intact during processing. But black rice gets its dark color from anthocyanins - the same 'ingredient' that gives blueberries their color. But beyond coloring, anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants that have been linked to reduced cancer

The question remains - where can you find black rice and what do you do with it after it's in your pantry? Personally, I haven't seen black rice on my local grocery store shelves, but you may be able to find it in specialty grocery stores or health food stores.
