There are more than 23 million Americans living with diabetes. This may lead you to wonder if you or your loved ones are at risk for diabetes or if you have it and don't know until you get one of the complications from diabetes.
Diabetes is, in fact, a family issue because it's genetic.
Your family members should know about your diabetes so they can be aware of their symptoms and have their blood sugar checked or take precautions to even prevent it.
Type 2 diabetes tends to run in the family, so if you have it your children are at higher risk for developing diabetes.
Your family can help choose the right foods to lower your blood sugars and keep them under control within normal levels.
According to research, nuts may improve blood-fat levels as well as blood-glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Studies also suggest that using aspirin can decrease the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Diabetes can be treated by regularly practicing yoga and changes in lifestyle and diet control.
Obesity is a major health problem in recent years and is the cause of many diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. According to research studies, depression can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.
The American Dietetic Association has released a list of so-called super foods that have a low- glycemic index, may help lower blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar, and may help lower the risk of complications such as heart disease or stroke.
Try to enhance your diet with these super foods: citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons and limes, fat-free milk and yogurt, whole grains, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, berries, including blueberries and strawberries, and fish with omega-3s, such as salmon, tuna and halibut.
Changing eating habits can be a challenging aspect of diabetes, but it's manageable. Along with proper diet, medication and physical activity you can manage your diabetes by maintaining healthful blood-sugar levels by eating meals regularly, eating slowly, controlling your portion sizes, eating less salt and saturated fats, choosing whole-grain products and including more fruits and vegetables in your daily diet.
