This do-it-yourself book is a treasure. "A culmination of 15 years of illness, searching and healing", it is worthy of being on your shelf but worthier still in your hands! Yes, don't just read it, practise practise practise ! The author doesn't just give techniques like reflexology and yoga to name two, he enriches them with humane understanding ("All deep, long, lasting healing comes from healing the heart") and empowering affirmations ("Spend a few minutes at the start of each day just thinking a simple phrase like 'happiness from within' and try to remember your good feelings or intentions throughout the day.")

The therapies he has personally benefited from and wishes to share are:

Aromatherapy. You inhale fragrances to stimulate and balance your systems and massage the prescribed oil into the skin to penetrate the tissues. A detailed list of oils and their properties as also well-illustrated massage techniques are great aids.

Reflexology is a foot-massage therapy. You press or knead for five to 10 seconds on various points of the soles and toes. These points correspond to places in the body and restore the flow of the blocked life-force energy in that part.

Reiki. This is literally about taking health in your own hands. You allow healing energy to flow from your hands to cleanse and renew the body's subtle internal energy system.

Bach flower remedies. In a nutshell, "To treat a short-term negative state of mind, we simply put two drops of the remedy in a small glass of still water and sip it at intervals until our symptoms improve."

Homeopathy. The best thing about homeopathy is, says Vennells rightly, that it has absolutely no side-effects. Apart from the obvious disorder you'd want to treat, he suggests taking into account: your state of mind, when a symptom worsens or feels better, the location of the problem, what brought on the symptoms, sleep pattern, physical and mental sensitivity. Given also are a list of remedies which can be safely tried at home.

Herbs. There's great potential here. Herbal remedies are a support system that can coexist with allopathic medicine. Some familiar remedies: for arteriosclerosis - lime; high blood pressure - garlic; cold - ginger; cough - aniseed; psoriasis - flax seed; toothache - cloves, and so on.

Reiki Meditations for Beginners By Lawrence Ellyard Publisher: Hind Pocket Books/Full Circle Price: Rs 250

Crystal therapy. I'm sceptical, but Vellens seems to read my mind! He suggests carrying a small piece of clear quartz in your pocket for a few days and notice the difference. For those who wish to try it out, there's quite a mine of information on how each crystal vibrates with each chakra.

Yoga. Though there's nothing new in this section, yet, it's a useful, condensed how-to version - relaxation, asanas, breathing, diet, meditation - for those who are too busy to read an entire book on yoga.

Meditation. This short, concise chapter is practical as the author describes relaxation meditation, healing visualisation and meditation for developing compassion. He suggests ending a meditation session by visualising the light coming slowly into the body and sealing it with a mental intention: "Balanced, centred, grounded, blessed and protected." Ah, so beautifully comprehensive!

There's a lot to learn and practise from this book - outer healing, internal healing, environmental healing, even the powerful healing effect of pure, honest, compassionate intentions. You get to heal yourself and your loved ones. And experience a tremendous inner growth in the magnificent process. Go for it! Revel in the reiki rain

Your Reiki Treatment How to Get the Most Out of It By Bronwen and Frans Stiene Publisher: Hind Pocket Books/ Full Circle Price: Rs 195

To get off to an exhilarating start, go with the flow of the author Ellyard's guided-meditation CD gifted with the book. It's amazing. Your mind freshens from the "reiki rain" showered upon you, and the environment around feels cleansed. Of course, in the book, Ellyard does warn first-timers about suppressed negativities rising to the surface during meditation - agitation, regret, heaviness, dullness, doubt, vengeance, attachment and drowsiness - and suggests remedies including the good old splash of cold water on the face to avoid nodding off!

His chapter 'Overcoming Disturbing Emotions' is excellent in its analysis. One effective way, he advocates is: try and 'sell' your anger to friends. Ask them how much they'd pay for it. When you see nobody is interested in buying it, you'll realise how worthless it is.

Fear is dealt with an apt acronym: F He urges: gain a relationship with the thing you fear be in a calm space as an observer until gradually you realise that there's no point in investing so much energy in it.

Meditation, according to Tibetan Buddhism, literally means 'to familiarise with a positive, natural state of mind'. Meditators see things in a new way - "Rather than getting involved in the dramas, we can decide to take a more active role in the comedies of life," Ellyard writes drolly.

There's a lot to chew over - the hows and whys of meditation, postures, the four contemplations, karma, compassion and 22 meditations - that enable us "to live better, die better and be reborn better," promises Ellyard. At Rs 250, it's a steal. About healing and healers

This book sets benchmarks for reiki practitioners (healers) and clients (patients) and, maybe, that's why it's like reading a textbook. As you may already know, reiki is the energy (prana) that flows through everybody. Blocks in this energy cause discomfort and disease. The healer unblocks the energy with a hands-on treatment of 45-60 minutes per session. Simultaneously, the client accepts more energy into the body to subtly cleanse stagnant areas.

You learn that a good practitioner humbly sees herself/himself as a tool for the energy to move through him/her to the client, and should not scare the client with myths and superstitions. Whereas, the client should be clear that she/he will receive whatever she/he needs at this moment in life - complete acceptance of this principle apparently helps deeper healing.

There are heartening revelations:

Research shows that diseases like cancer may first become apparent energetically rather than physically. Reiki treatment can heal at the energy level and prevent it from setting in on the physical level.

During treatments if you get smells pleasant or unpleasant, don't worry. A smell signals that some emotions (connected to that smell) are being released. It is part of the healing process.

The most useful section is the one on self-healing at home after the treatment is over. It includes meditation, writing a journal, hands-on-healing instructions and grounding exercises.

Overall, it's informative with clear guidelines for practitioners to blossom into true healers.
