Keepers of the Earth is a truly unique class that offers children of Topanga an opportunity to come together to explore and discover the natural wonders that are present right in their very own backyard. What makes this class especially magical is what happens when a group of kids get together and explore their natural world together. Every discovery shared is enhanced by the delight of each child witnessing and participating.
Stacey Small started Keepers of the Earth, an environmental education and field ecology class for children in 2008. She has been a tree hugging nature lover for most of her life. She worked for several years as an environmental educator and activist for Greenpeace. A Topanga State Park Docent, Small has done extensive training and field study of the Santa Monica Mountains. Mother of two budding naturalists, she realizes the urgency of sharing the natural world with young children and instilling in them a deep sense of wonder, gratitude and responsibility.

Students of Keepers of the Earth learn to develop a deeper awareness of and connection with nature, raising consciousness about their place in nature. The class provides a framework where children can intimately explore and learn about their vital role as stewards of our life-sustaining planet.
Each week a new topic is explored through the use of Native American stories and culture, science activities, art, drama and environmental education. Some of the areas of study include: animals, astronomy, earth stewardship, ecological principles, energy, foraging, habitats, herbal medicine, geology, natural resources, plants, seasons, tracking and weather.
One week the children might put on their deer ears and walk quietly through the chaparral listening to the sounds of nature as a deer does. The next week they may be belly down on the ground looking from an ant's point of view. Another week they may learn about the importance of trees and what can be done to preserve our forests.
The fall session of Keepers of the Earth will begin in early October. Classes meet most weeks at Topanga State Park on Thursdays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. To reserve space or for more information, call Stacey Small at (310) 455-0652 or e-mail cosmosmama@verizon.net
