PROCTORVILLE, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Nearly 25 million Americans suffer from chronic sinus infections or sinusitis.
The headaches, pressure in the eyes, nose and cheeks are often caused by colds, allergies or infection.
With hay fever season right around the corner, that pounding, painful stuffy head feeling is sure to plague many. But a new procedure, now available locally, promises minimal pain, quick recovery and instant relief.
"I can breathe," Carl Williams said.
But, to understand the gravity of that statement, you have to first hear Carl Williams' painful story.
"I had chronic sinusitis and headaches all the time, and one side of my nose would be plugged up all the time," he said.
Williams said it's a problem he's had all his life -- more than 70 years.
"I had infection in here and couldn't get it cleared up," he said. "I had tons of antibiotics, and it would get cleared up a little but then come right back, and the headaches would run clear up to the back of my head."
During a routine checkup for chronic sinusitis, Dr. Art Roa easily identified and highlighted Williams' problem. It made him a prime candidate for a relatively new procedure called balloon sinuplasty. It's a minimally invasive operation where Dr. Roa inserts a device into Williams' frontal sinus passage. He then inflates a tiny balloon, opening the passage and draining the sinus of mucous and infection.
Stints remain in the nose for a few weeks to ensure the opening remains permanently. The entire operation is performed on an outpatient basis and takes less than an hour.
"I had no pain and no pain pills," Williams said.
Balloon sinuplasty is relatively new to this area. Just a handful of doctors, including Dr. Roa -- an ENT at Holzer Clinic in Proctorville, are performing it. The alternative to this procedure is often something more extensive with more pain and a longer recovery time. Plus, it may not provide permanent relief. Posted by: willie on Mar 14, 2009 at 12:11 PM

Isn't this amazing. I am certain everyone in the Ohio Valley knows about sinus problems. Even after you have moved away from Ohio Valley, you are plagued for life. This is a good thing for all of us. Very good reporting, thanks.

Carrie, Thank you so much for this story. I'd never heard of this procedure before. I suffer from chronic sinusitis and non-allergic rhinitis. I'm definitely going to look into this procedure and research it. Thanks again!

To Sarah: I never implied that Dr. Roa was the only surgeon performing this procedure. The story was for public awareness about the procedure itself and not so much the surgeon performing it. In fact, the last few lines of the story say, "a handful of doctors" are performing it. (see above) The procedure is still relatively new--a year is not that long. To the other posters: yes, there are docs in charleston doing it. Just go to: http://www.acclarent.com/find-a-doctor/ to find the doctor nearest you performing the balloon sinuplasty.
