What Causes a Sinus Infection SINUSES are the air-filled cavities in our facial bones that warm and humidify the air we breathe. They also filter the air by trapping dirt and bacteria in the mucous produced by the cells lining the sinuses, thereby decreasing the risk of infection.

Sometimes the lining of the sinuses becomes inflamed and swollen and the mucous gets trapped. This is commonly triggered by a viral infection such as a cold, or inflammation related to allergies. The mucous can become infected with bacteria, which then multiply, resulting in a painful sinus infection.

Symptoms include aching and pressure in the face, blocked nose, headaches, thick green or yellow mucous, facial swelling, fever and fatigue. In severe cases the infection may spread to the facial bones or even to the brain, requiring urgent medical attention.

In most cases, taking paracetamol, saline nasal sprays or steam inhalations may suffice. However, in many cases your doctor may recommend antibiotics. Treating allergies, such as hay fever, using preventive measures and treatments can help decrease the incidence of future infections.

Identifying and minimising exposure to allergens is important, as well as using a nasal spray containing preventive medication such as steroids.

Stopping smoking is also helpful. In chronic cases, surgery to remove polyps and assist with sinus drainage may be recommended. - Dr Cindy Pan

When repeated sinusitis turns into chronic sinus infection the pain can be unbearable. In chronic infection, the main objective is to improve the immune response to fight the pathogen.

This is best achieved by using herbal medicines such as echinacea, goldenseal, andrographis, garlic and goldenrod. Nutritional supplementation with vitamin C and zinc helps to improve the immune response. In the diet, increase consumption of garlic, onion, ginger, chilli, horseradish and wasabi.

Numerous studies have found fresh horseradish better than the dried horseradish found in supplemental preparations. Grate a fresh horseradish root into a cup of hot water with fresh lemon juice, raw honey and grated ginger. It's tasty, nutritious and fights infection.

Stagnant mucous production is frequently aggravated by some dietary foods, including alcohol, which can swell the mucous membranes. Drink lots of warm, clear fluids, as increasing fluid intake helps reduce the thickness of the mucous that can promote infection.

Intra-nasal washes such as saline sprays or neti pots (traditional Ayurvedic pots) that promote flushing of the nasal passages can ease the pressure and clear infection. If all else fails, go into the ocean and clear your sinuses with sea water. - Leah Hechtman
