MANCAT History - Nicholls Apr 2, 2009

Graham Lee will have to pass the doctor on Saturday morning if he is to partner Kilbeggan Blade in the John Smith's Grand National at Aintree.

Lee was stood down from his one ride at the track on Thursday after medical staff were not happy with his condition following a fall at Wetherby on Tuesday. He went to Fazakerley Hospital in Liverpool for X-rays and will sit out Friday's action - with the aim of being passed fit for the feature event.

Lee's agent Richard Hale said: "I spoke to Graham earlier and, from what I can gather, he thought he was fit enough to ride - but has had to go to hospital for an X-ray. I think he has to have physio, show the X-rays and then pass the doctor to be able to ride."

The top 40 in the handicap - with the exception of the already scratched War Of Attrition - all stood their ground for Saturday's race.

Zabenz takes his place at the foot of the weights on 10st 5lb, while Cloudy Lane has the burden of top-weight under 11st 10lb and last year's winner Comply Or Die shoulders 11st 6lb for David Pipe and David Johnson.

Ante-post favourite My Will (11st 4lb) is one of four runners for Paul Nicholls, with Eurotrek (11st 3lb), Big Fella Thanks (11st 1lb) and Cornish Sett (10st 10lb) all lining up. Becher Chase winner Black Apalachi carries 11st 5lb along with Irish National winner Hear The Echo, while leading fancy Rambling Minster has 10st 9lb.

Owner Andy Stewart feels ante-post favourite My Will is "far too short" a price. The nine-year-old has been all the rage for the world's most famous steeplechase since running a mighty race to finish fifth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last month, meaning he is 8lb well-in according to the official handicapper.

News that dual Grand National-winning jockey Ruby Walsh will be in the saddle has seen his price contract even further and he is trading at a general 7-1.

"It's great Ruby chose him and it's a major plus for a horse who sometimes makes the occasional mistake. I think the bookmakers have got him too short and he should basically be that price to get round. But he's never been better so there will be no excuses and Paul Nicholls is feeling very bullish," Stewart told At The Races.
