The buzz of chain saws could be heard all day in Durant as city workers and citizens began clearing away debris from Wednesday's microburst that tore through central Durant.
A microburst, a sudden downdraft of high winds, came crashing down on the city at approximately 3:30 a.m., according to James Dalton, director of Durant/Bryan County Emergency Management, who said there was no tornadic activity.
The microburst lasted approximately two minutes and Dalton estimated it reached speeds of 60 miles per hour.
It toppled trees and power lines and left approximately 2,000 OG&E customers without power, including the Durant Daily Democrat. OG&E crews were brought in from outside Durant to help restore power.
Most of the damage was in Durant from North Washington Avenue to Northeast Fifth Avenue and Main Street to Mulberry Street. Other areas had sporadic damage while others remained untouched.
The city of Durant completed a damage assessment, a list that does not include vehicles, fences or outbuildings.
Two homes, located at 601 and 607 N. 11th Ave. were condemned due to trees crashing onto them.
Emergency crews rescued Duane and Denise Krebs from their 607 N. 11th Ave. home. Mr. Krebs is expected to remain in the hospital a couple of days due to his injuries.
Nine structures sustained substantial damage. These included seven single-family residences, one duplex and one commercial business. Sixty-four structures had minor damage; 58 single-family residences, three duplexes and three commercial businesses.
