Participants can sign up during Relay for Life

BULLHEAD CITY - Relay for Life will offer an additional twist for cancer research and prevention in addition to the nationally known monetary fundraiser this year.

During Relay for Life, May 1-2, participants and the general public have an opportunity to sign up for a national Cancer Prevention Study, a 25-year analysis of cancer causes and possible treatments.

"This is such an exciting opportunity for the area," said Karen Morris, Bullhead-Laughlin Relay for Life chairwoman. "We have a chance to be part of history."

Participants in the Cancer Prevention Study agree to a long-term analysis of their medical changes. Every few years, participants will be sent a questionnaire to fill out and are asked to update their medical information at that time. Those in the study need not live in the Colorado River region; as long as they can update their address for the national database they can stay in the study.

The study is open to people of both genders between the ages of 30 and 60. Participants cannot have ever been diagnosed with cancer; however, other long-term afflictions such as diabetes or hepatitis do not exclude people from the study.

Phlebotomists will be on hand from 6:30 until 10:30 p.m. at Relay for Life to take blood samples from the participants; the samples will be frozen and stored for analysis should a person be diagnosed with cancer during the 25 years of the study.

Morris said the National Cancer Institutes' Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results will analyze the blood and determine what environmental, lifestyle or genetic causes that might influence cancer.

The Bullhead City-Mohave Valley region is one of 189 sites nationwide chosen to participate in the 25-year study. Morris said it is an honor for the area to be chosen.

"No sites in Nevada were chosen at all, and there are only a handful of sites in Arizona, but none as rural as we are," she said.

Interpreters will be available to assist with signing up Spanish-speaking participants for the study.

Bullhead City Mayor Jack Hakim agreed it is a great opportunity for citizens, snowbirds and even out-of-town visitors.

"It's special for Bullhead City and the river region to be selected," Hakim said.

Morris said there are 89 teams with a total of 1,136 individual participants signed up for the May event, with approximately 115 additional individuals who need to sign up.

Relay for Life is the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, which raises money for research for all types of cancers. The teams will sell food, drinks and other items during the Relay event.

The theme for this year's Relay is "World for a Cure," an international theme where participating teams are assigned a country to inspire the decor of their booths.
