Omega 3's is long chain essential fatty acids. They are essential because though the body needs them to maintain optimum health, it cannot make it. They must come from food sources or through supplements.

Most people's diets are dangerously low in Omega 3's and abundant in Omega 6. This imbalance can cause health conditions such as obesity, Diabetes, Stroke, and Heart disease among others. Correcting this imbalance with supplements or foods rich Omega 3's and lessening the consumption of Omega 6's is imperative. Studies have shown that because Omega 3 is high in DHA docosahexaenoic acid that is necessary for brain health and retinal health. It also supports the proper function of cell membranes.

Studies have further shown that supplementation with Omega 3 improves such conditions as ADHD and may prevent strokes, Heart disease, and Arthrosclerosis. Fish oils have long been used to treat colds, the flu, and inflammations such as Arthritis. There are many other conditions that can be helped or improved with the addition of Omega 3 supplements. Be sure to check with your physician for any concerns about medications such as blood thinners because of the blood thinning quality of the supplements.

There is a variety of food sources that are rich in Omega 3. For the sake of clarity and organization they are listed below in the following categories: Fish oil sources, seeds and nuts, and plant sources. There is currently Omega 3 meat available.

The best fish oil source for Omega 3 is the Hoki fish native to New Zealand. Additional fish sources of Omega 3 include cold water Salmon, Halibut, Scallops, Shrimps, Mackerel, and Cod. Snapper, Tuna (canned/frozen), and Sardines are also excellent sources of Omega 3. There is some truth to the belief that fish is brain food.

Seeds and nuts rich in Omega 3 are flax, flax seeds and mustard seeds. Sesame seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Walnuts, and Soy beans are also rich in Omega 3. Rape seeds are another source of Omega 3.

Plant sources of Omega 3 include both fruit and vegetables. Fruits that are rich in Omega 3 include Strawberries in particular. Vegetable sources that are rich in Omega 3 include Romaine lettuce, Spinach, boiled Cauliflower and Cabbage, and Broccoli. Brussel Sprouts, Green beans, turnip greens and Tofu (Soy protein) are all rich in Omega 3. Dried cloves and dried Oregano are spices from plants that are in Omega 3's as well.
