Viagra and the CIA

It has been reported in a number of sources that Viagra has more than a medicinal use. The little blue pill continues to be used as a weapon in the war on terror in Afghanistan. Compared with trained troops and firearms what use could Pfizer’s wonder drug be in this cause?

The CIA have a long history of getting they want, usually information, but what could they offer someone in a situation of power, with relative wealth and comfort that would encourage them to talk? The CIA wants information on the Taliban, and Afghan chieftains have access to that information. Apparently many Afghan chieftains have more than one wife so welcome the opportunity to use Viagra to help them cope with the rigours of married life.

So, the CIA provides the Viagra, and the Afghan chieftains provide the information. This form of trade could only work in a country with limited infrastructure, imports and communications. The fact that it might be impossible for many Afghans to buy Viagra online is what makes this so unusual. One other interesting point is that in that part of the world, unlike everywhere else, Viagra is a relative unknown. There can’t be many other places where that is the case.

The arrival of the blue pill is part of a greater scheme though, to offer incentives that are low risk. Compared with weapons (which can fall into the wrong hands) or expensive goods (which can create conflict through envy) Viagra is the smart option.
