Unsurprisingly, men who regularly buy Viagra and use it frequently report more instances of condoms breaking during intercourse. The study from Sexually Transmitted Infections, reported on aidsmap.com, says that users of ED drugs are 400% more likely to split their condoms.
There are other reports that have different findings, that there is no increase in condom breakage frequency when meds such as Cialis or Viagra are being used. So what are the myths surrounding this topic?
One view is that because Viagra and similar drugs increase erectile swelling it puts increased strain on a condom. While this is theoretically possible, condoms have a massive breaking strain, and tend to fail only if mishandled. For a condom to break due to erectile swelling, that swelling would have to be so profound as to be possibly life threatening.
Another more likely view is that the increased duration of an erection is partly responsible for breakage. If intercourse is prolonged it is more likely that a condom can fail due to fatigue, and if intercourse is less inhibited and more vigorous this will add to the risk. The research was open ended though, as conflicting evidence of no increase in condom failure was reported in a different sample.
What can be concluded is that while ED drug therapies may improve erectile function and sexual performance, they have implications associated with contraception- condom use in particular. One possible outcome is that if enough people encounter condom related issues with such drugs condom usage may fall.
The implications are unwanted pregnancies as well as the increased risk of contracting or spreading STDs. So, if you are using Viagra, and encounter any condom issues it may be worth speaking to your GP about other contraceptives.
