TOYchallenge winners

A group of sixth-graders from St. Mary Magdalen Catholic School in Altamonte Springs were selected to advance to the Sally Ride Science TOYchallenge Nationals at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The AquaGamers, led by teacher Deborah Gordon, included Ethan Brennan, Anna Burbank, Sarah Joyce, Lauren Nunez, Shandy Sulen and Tucker Smith.

They invented a game for the pool called Make a Splash, which includes waterproof cards and other game pieces. It is a floating board game that encourages players to learn pool safety as they practice swimming.

"The students were really excited about the idea of a toy for the pool, because they knew the judges would be looking for something unique. For teams from Florida, it was a natural idea," said Gordon, who teaches the school's gifted-students program. "But they also were challenged to make it fun and make it work in the water. They put a lot of creative thought into Make A Splash."

Hundreds of teams from across the country participated in TOYchallenge, a toy- and game-design competition that gives kids the chance to step out of their classrooms and develop their engineering and design skills by creating their dream toy.

The teams, which had to have at least 50 percent girls, submitted written descriptions and visual presentations of their original toy or game concepts.

SCC interior design award

Seminole Community College's interior design program was one of seven schools awarded a Most Outstanding Annual Requirements trophy at the National Kitchen Bath Association's 2008 conference in Chicago.

More than 50 association-accredited schools from the United States and Canada submitted student-designed projects that included floor, elevation, construction and mechanical plans.

SCC -- one of three community colleges to win the trophy -- is the only college in Central Florida to offer an association-endorsed kitchen-and-bath specialization certificate. Students receive hands-on experience with state-of-the-art design software programs and learn trends in the industry.

O Ambassadors

South Seminole Middle School was selected as one of 2,000 schools across the country to participate in the O Ambassador program.

The program is a joint project of Oprah's Angel Network and Kids Can Free the Children, a charitable organization that provides support to developing countries for poverty relief, education, health and sustainable development.

"At South Seminole, we are learning to address problems such as hunger, poverty and limited access to education across the globe," said O Ambassador sponsor Kristie Odom. "Most importantly, students realize how important it is to leave their destinations in better shape than when they arrived."

Millennium's magnet award

Millennium Middle School has received a Magnet Schools of Distinction Award.

The Sanford school was among 120 schools from 4,000 nationwide that received the award during the 26th annual Magnet Schools of America conference.

Schools were selected based on a commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, desegregation and diversity efforts and delivery of quality services.

Millennium Middle School, a fine arts and communication magnet, was recognized for its curriculum, which combines academics with visual and performing arts.

It is the only middle school in the district that offers instruction in dance, drama, orchestra, instrumental and vocal music, and visual arts. In addition, the communications focus includes world languages, law studies and television and film production and technology.

It also offers an International Baccalaureate preparatory program.
