How to Do a Kidney Cleansing Fast | eHow.com A holistic health approach encourages the body's natural ability to heal itself. This natural ability is often hampered by the choices we make, for instance, by exposing ourselves to toxins in our lifestyle. If the body is not burdened by toxins, it can function correctly and heal any illness that does occur.

The widespread use of pesticides not only creates a body burden of toxins which can keep one from healing, but can also cause acute and chronic disease. Chemical-based pesticides, including insect repellent and herbicides, reportedly cause health problems ranging from cancer to birth defects to Parkinson's Disease.

According to the Toxics Information Project, 10,400 people in the US die each year from cancer directly related to pesticides. They estimate that the cost of cancer in terms of lost production, income, and medical expenses amount to over $38 billion each year.

Since children have smaller organs and less developed immune systems, they are especially vulnerable to toxins. A 1987 study by the National Cancer Institute showed that children living in pesticide-treated homes had nearly a 4 times greater risk of developing leukemia.

A February 2009 report on the U.S. Atlantic Coast Childhood Brain Cancer Study links it with pre-birth pesticide exposure. This study found that children who live in homes where their parents use pesticides are twice as likely to develop brain cancer. The parents questioned in this study generally used pesticides for lawn and garden care.

Weed killers such as RoundUp have been linked to increased risk for developing the cancer known as non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, as well as being hormone disruptors and associated with birth defects. RoundUp interferes with the production of the adrenal hormone essential for brain development and has been linked to an increase in Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD). In addition, the University of Southern California Children's Health Study revealed that, "Asthma risk linked with herbicides was greater than that linked with any other factor."

In "Pesticides and Breast Cancer: A Wake Up Call," Dr. Meriel Watts identifies 98 pesticides that may be implicated in the global breast cancer epidemic. In the U.S. alone, over 192,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year, according to the American Cancer Society.

While Dr. Watts says that, "Scientifically it is impossible to prove that a particular pesticide does or does not cause breast cancer," she recommends "a precautionary approach to chemicals for which there is evidence of a link with breast cancer, ensuring their replacement with safer alternatives."

Pesticide chemicals are stored in the body's fat tissue, and can move from the fat to the bloodstream and carried to every organ in the body. Any toxin not excreted by the body can be recycled continually into the bloodstream, re-exposing the system again and again, in a lethal loop of health roulette.

Holistic medicine offers options and suggestions on pesticide detoxification, including cleansing herbs and far-infrared sauna treatment. Liver and kidney cleansers commonly used to help detoxify the body are Milk Thistle, Dandelion root, N-acetyl Cysteine (NAC), Artichoke, Phospholipids (lecithin), Turmeric (olena root), Burdock root, Red clover, and a whole-foods diet rich in fiber and plant foods, low in refined sugar and fat, and as free from pesticides and pollutants as possible.

To use an old adage, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Reduce your reliance on pesticides inside and outside your home by opting for least-toxic pest-control alternatives. Be proactive in asking your neighborhood, community association and the county and state to stop spraying pesticides. Follow the lead of the Leleiwi Community Association, which has worked with Hawaii County's Parks & Recreation Department since 1992 to keep Hilo's Keaukaha oceanfront parks free of herbicides.
