BRIDGER - Federal and state officials began sorting cattle early this morning at the Morgan ranch south of Bridger. The cattle are being shipped to slaughter following their exposure to brucellosis.
The six cows that tested positive for brucellosis in May were separated from the herd into a own small corral and have been marked with a big, red B on the left side of their necks.
Ranch owner Jim Morgan, said he and his wife, Sandy, weighed their calves this morning and then watched an Internet cattle auction to check on current prices.
"They are getting 1.45 a pound (at auction)," said Morgan. He said he and his wife are being paid 85 cents a pound for their cattle from APHIS, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, a branch of the federal Department of Agriculture.
