Obesity or overweight striking Americans to the staggering percentages of 63.1% of all American adults according to figures by Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index 2009. What causes this to happen? Simply put less exercise and unhealthy diets.

If that does not send shock waves going here are some figures that just may among those who are obese and overweight.

High blood pressure present in 46.2% for obesity and 31.1% overweight.
High cholesterol present in 36.8% for obesity and 30.1% overweight.
Diabetes present in 21.1% for obesity and 9.8% overweight.
Heart attacks of which were reported found 6.3% for obesity and 4.8% overweight.
Depression was present in 23.3% for obesity and 15.3% overweight.

Latest reports are now becoming wide spread in the news as the problem of obesity seems to be a wide spread problem among Americans not limited to the health conditions in which it produces.

According to the New York Times report the rates of obesity had climbed last year with the rate of 30% or greater within nine states last year. This is opposed to the figure of only three states in 2007.

This translate to the fact that around 2.4 million Americans had added to the figures of obesity just between two years equaling out to a staggering figure of 72.5 million persons.

Another shocking point to this is these figures most likely are under assessed. They were taken via a telephone survey. 400,000 persons where questioned about weight and height and as we all are aware there is some exaggeration in those figures.

Dr. Thomas Frieden Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who had released a report about the prevalence of obesity. The adult numbers have doubled and the children in America have tripled in most recent decades.

Researchers are attributing this problem to the usual issue across America, not enough exercise and the wrong type of food consumption. In reality there are not enough fruits and vegetables being consumed. There is way to much high calorie meals being consumed today which contain abundant amounts of sugar and fat.

The 30% or more rate of obesity was in the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee and West Virginia.

What most persons do not realize is that quality of life is also starting to diminish.

A nationwide study has indicated the number of healthy days each year that Americans lose are now doubled within the last twenty years. In in 1993 time loss was averaged at 7.5 in 2008 it had increased on the dramatic side to 17.

For the report researchers had observed information which was obtained from around 3.5 million Americans followed by the CDC within the years 1993 to 2008. This had resulted of findings revealing that obesity has practically doubled in the adult populace since that time.

The writers of the study then had used information that had came from self reports pertaining to health and activities done daily. This was done for determination for the number of days each year Americans had lost due to bad health. Then combined for determination, the very first time, it had produced one single estimate of complete health time which was lost because of obesity. This was provided by Dr. Erica L. Lubetkin, co writer of the study, which is published in this Septembers issue of American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Lubetkin is an associate medical professor within the department of community health and social medicine at the City College of New York.

Director of university of nutrition of Washington University in St. Louis, states that this study has made it evident that this outlook will have an extreme effect upon society and including the health care system if changes are not made. Increased numbers of persons will work for less years and will require greater social support. Public places will have to be altered in order to welcome persons who weigh more and with more health issues that simply can not climb stairs or walk with ease. This study is simply saying that the reaction will be upon all due to the fact it does pertain totally across all barriers. The strain that will be put on the economy will be felt by all persons.

Dr. Lubetkin states massive actions were required such as those for smoking. Junk foods should be taken out of the schools, there should be more recess and gym. Disparaging television and computer use according to Dr. Lubetkin would be a ideal place to begin. She does hold the belief that most of America does not know what a healthy food is.

The question here is should we of all seen this trend coming. Most persons are aghast with this latest news about obesity in America. However, this is not a new newsflash about the obesity issue within Americans.

Back in June 2004, Time Magazine had ran an article entitled America's Obesity Crisis "How We Grew So Big". In that well written article it was stated that Americans being obese is nothing new. This was back in 2004. Over six years ago it was already reported about the problems of obesity in our country. Instead of heading the warning American's chose to go ahead and just up their intakes of soda, greasy foods, sugar ridden products and the great American french fry.

Weight loss products Gastric bypass surgery with estimates of 140,000 American's each year as a solution to weight loss and why not when top celebrities seem to do it making it "fashionable" treatment these days. Let us not forget the health club industry who is making their fortunate at memberships.

So how is to blame for the problem of obesity in America? Honestly, there are several elements involved. Not one thing can be blamed for this not so new crisis in America.

Some persons believe that depression can cause a person to overeat. Others label it as comfort food. Ok I will admit a lot of us and yes as much as I hate saying this women reach for that Ben and Jerry ice cream upon the latest break up to a really rotten day at work. Learned behavior is another aspect. I am sure a lot of us remember growing up with our parents saying you do not leave the table till you finish all of your dinner. It did not matter if we were really hungry or not, it was deemed the household law.

Lifestyle does contribute to this epidemic. Being constantly on the go, it makes it easier to stop at McDonald's for those hamburgers and shakes then grabbing something healthy from the store.

A lot of parents also are guilty. Some parents do recognize the fact their child are becoming obese but yet still maintain that never ending supply of potato chips and soda for their children. What happened to the idea of that bowl of fruit that use to sit on the kitchen table. My theory if it is not purchased and brought into the house that eliminates that issue, at least at home.

School system does not really help here either with vending machines full of candy bars and chips for purchase. You can put a fruit machine next to those machines and which one do you think the students are going to line up for?

The question now seems to be is it true that American's are uneducated about obesity and health risks associated with it, or do they simply wish not to alter their habits. Can American's really not be aware of the current flow of health conditions associated with obesity these days.

Persons lifestyles are their own to do with as they wish. We can only hope to convince even a few of those die hard " I like my junk food" persons minds about nutrition. Others and I have witnessed this simply do understand but for whatever reason just do not seem to care about the health risks involved. Maybe Santa Claus here is to blame remember we do tell the tale of Santa and his belly shaking like a bowl full of jelly. Maybe those traditional stories of Santa and the Sugar Plumb Fairy is really at fault here.

Commercials too are in part at fault. They gear their commercials to kids pointing out candy bars and that over abundant sugary cereal that every child in America will drive mom insane at the grocery store to purchase it. When have you really seen a commercial children would pay attention to geared to children to eat fruit? Yes I have apples and grapes on television in a commercial selling underwear do not see where that is geared on nutrition though. It seems to me that if we can create commercials to hold a child's interest for that candy bar why can we not create one to hold their interest for food which is healthy and beneficial for their system?

If you would like to lose weight or just eat more healthy a nutritionist can help you device a diet plan to fit your needs and lifestyle. There is an abundance of information for heart healthy diets.

Exercise is another important issue there is a growing trend for yoga Tia Chi these days. Maybe just check out a class or two in your area. You never know you may enjoy it and it does provide benefits to your health.
