To the Readers' Forum:
I read with interest your question of the day regarding the Buffalo Seneca Casino legal decision. First off, I think the state dropped the ball by not originally legalizing non-Native American gambling in the state; other than bingo, Quick Draw, pull tabs and scratch-offs. Other states have been doing it for years; with more states now allowing it.
People are going to gamble, so why don't we try as hard as we can to keep them in NYS? Being that is in the past, NYS should now do all it can to fight for and promote Native American gambling in the state. It's beyond me that one federal judge can decide what's good or not good for the state.
Although the returns will not be as great with the Senecas, we will still be rewarded with the benefits of increased tourism, employment, (employment taxes!!), miscellaneous revenues associated with gaming and the gamblers (food, gas, lodging, shopping, etc and all sales tax received on these purchases. And don't forget the negotiated payment from the Senecas! Fight for it now!

This writer has points, but does not look at the full picture. Casino's are no a tourism stop, they are a home for the elderly, the lonely and the poor trying to get rich quick! Casinos are not for families, and once a person arrives at a casino, they spend until the have no money and then go home.
The bigger problem with the Indian casino's is that they take advantage of you with gas prices as there no longer a 25 cent difference.
Finally, Indian casinos are a local magnet taking from our economony! Trust me, as I lost over $5,000 in 2007!
Dude, we don't need casinos here or anywhere...period. We're all allured with these get rich quick schemes, and you know what? They don't work. What about the blight that protrudes from the Forgotten Neighborhoods that once were green and very populated? In a city in Southern Cali, we were entertained with thoughts of casino drops and paved roads, millions of samoleons into the veins of the school system and more policing, better response time from the firefighters, blah blah. They were voted in and they were supposed to been open by now. That was 5 years ago. What happened? Who knows. No paved roads, no $30K jobs that were promised.
If the Senecas get their way, how will our tourism benefit, especially since people will spend their money on or in that area, not our lovely area? What ever happened of obtaining real jobs (steel and automotive industries)?
