Kolkata: Alarmed by the sudden rise in cancer cases, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Cancer Research Institute (NSCBCRI) is setting up 15 telemedicine centres in the city and districts.

Cancer Control Programme has sanctioned Rs 50 lakh for the purpose," said Dr Ashis Mukhopadhyay, NSCBCRI director. He added, "Sitting in Kolkata, a cancer patient can now seek advice from the eminent oncologists of Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, through telemedicine centres."

According to the NSCBCRI director, cancer cases are on the rise. Nearly 75,000 new cancer patients are being treated every year. "Total number of cancer patients now being treated in Bengal has already touched five lakh," he pointed out.

Cancer, according to Dr Mukhopadhyay, is also on the rise in the entire country. Around 25 lakh patients are affected by various types of cancer every year.

The telemedicine centres will be linking Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute, Thakurpukur Cancer Centre and other cancer welfare centres in the city under the guidance of the oncologists of NSCBCRI. The NSCBCRI will be playing the role of the nodal centre in the city.

The NSCBCRI will also be linked with the telemedicine centres at Barrackpur, Diamond Harbour, Krishnanagar, Siliguri, Malda, Raiganj, Bankura and Midnapur.

The main purpose of the telemedicine centre is to help the patients in early detection of cancer by giving proper guidance and share information about symptoms so that they become alert about the disease affecting them.

This happens due to non-availability of information about the symptoms of the disease and lack of advice on how to tackle the disease," city oncologists said.

People can avoid the agony of waiting for an appointment and long travel to get medical treatment after the centres are set up. The patients from remote villages can seek medical advice via telemedicine systems through VSAT (satellite) and video conferencing at the centres.

X-Ray report of patient in remote areas can be scanned or images captured and medical advice of eminent doctors in remote location will be received by the patient within minutes at the centres," said the director.
