The family of the Buffalo girl that died of swine flu speaks to Eyewitness News about her final days. And another Buffalo parent is worried about her son who is in the hospital fighting this deadly flu strain.
Swine flu has now claimed two lives in Erie County. 15-year-old Matthew Davis died last weekend and yesterday 9-year-old Maya Harden passed away. She almost made it to her 10th birthday. But after hanging on for days in the ICU, the swine flu proved too hard to beat.
"If it wasn't for her lung's blockage, she would have fought. She would have made it," said Maya's father, Tommy Harden.
Maya had been on life support at Women and Children's Hospital in Buffalo. She had no prior health problems and seemed to be doing better until she took a turn for the worse.
"For a parent to look down at their child like that..." Harden said, shaking his head, "This flu, its something."
That's something Yvonne Cloud-Parker knows all too well. Her 15-year-old son Xavier is also in the hospital, battling the swine flu. "Very very deadly disease, quick. It eats you up really quick," she said.
And its especially scary for Parker because Xavier has battled asthma all his life and this week he developed pnemonia from his swine flu infection.
"If we can just get him to breathe without that oxygen, he'll be ok. And long as the antibiotics work for his pnemonia, he'll be ok. Until then, we're going to keep there, better safe than sorry, I don't want to lose my baby," said Parker.
Parker met Harden in the hospital corridor this week and she feels for the pain he's going through now. And both parents, separately agonizing over their children, share the same message.
"Don't second guess yourself, don't say you're going to give them Tylenol, some cold medicine. No, that don't work. Take your children and get them checked," said Harden.
"Beware, that disease is going to attack. You gotta catch it right away. They told me I just made it in time to bring him in. Just made it," said Parker.
Xavier is going into the 10th grade at Burgard High School. He's the third Buffalo public school student to be hospitalized with the swine flu.
But even though school is out for the summer, health officials warn parents not to let their guard down. Keep urging your children to wash their hands and seek immediate medical attention if you believe your child is getting sick.
