JAMES Wong proved a real natural when he burst on to the screen in his debut TV series seven days ago.
Packing the zest of Jamie Oliver's early television appearances, the scientist and gardener was a big hit with 2.5m viewers.
Since then, internet chatter has been buzzing about newcomer James, 27. So TV bosses hope an even bigger audience will tune in to the second edition of Grow Your Own Drugs (BBC2, tonight, 8.30pm).
The six-part series shows viewers how to make a variety of natural remedies, as well as beauty treatments, from plants that may be growing in their back garden. "We look at a whole range of minor everyday ailments, from athlete's foot to sore throats," explains James.
"In Asia, herbal remedies aren't considered hippy and weird or something that's yet to be replaced by synthetic drugs. Today they're as much part and parcel of everyday life as they always have been."
James uses his expert botanical knowledge to provide natural alternatives to many over the counter drugs. "I want to make people think differently about plants - growing all around us are plants that could make you feel better."
His fast-paced series, with an almost non-stop soundtrack, is made by independent TV producer Silver River, the company formed by Daisy Goodwin, who just happens to be the woman behind Channel 4's Jamie's Kitchen.
Future editions in the series include the natural wonders of trees and herbs, demonstrating how conkers can be turned into a soothing gel that might ease the pain of varicose veins and a tea from ginkgo leaf which may improve memory function.
One of his favourite remedies in the series in chilli plasters for muscle sprains. "Chillies contain a substance called capsaicin , which is what makes them spicy, and it's been traditionally used as a mild anaesthetic. It is also the active ingredient in some conventional arthritis creams.
"So many of the ingredients are easy to grow at home. We make this great lavender bath bomb - it's so impressive when it lands in the water and would make a great present, and takes only 15 minutes to make."
James is always careful to qualify his plant remedies. "Many haven't been clinically tested because they're traditional remedies that companies can't patent. But we do know a lot about the chemicals plants contain and how they might work.
