G-7, Mexico: risk groups to get 1st swine flu meds - Health AP ... The state Department of Health is preparing for what officials expect to be a busy and dangerous flu season.

Federal officials said they expect 90,000 flu-related deaths because of the H1N1 virus. That is three times the normal flu death rate.

Cases of flu medication were loaded onto a Hawaii Air Med flight Wednesday morning bound for Kauai. It was part of a statewide drill on distributing anti-viral medication to the neighbor islands in case of a full-blown flu epidemic.

"The purpose is to evaluate some of the critical components of how the Department of Health distributes medication and vaccines statewide," Bioterrorism Preparedness Chief Wes McDermott said.

At the drill command center, health officials also went over the statewide vaccination campaign that will start in October.

"Basically our main goal is the engage as many of our partners throughout the community as possible because together, hopefully we can fight this thing, and if we try to do it on our own we'll fail," state epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Park said.

The plan includes adding an H1N1 vaccination to the Stop Flu at School Program at public schools.

Recruiting as many doctors as possible to be vaccinators.

Make sure health care workers and first responders are vaccinated and there is even a plan to set up vaccination clinics for those who slip through the cracks.

Health officials want everybody to be vaccinated for the regular flu and the H1N1 and listen to all of the recommendations that we've all heard over and over again.

"If they don't listen to our recommendations -- washing your hands, covering their cough or sneeze, and especially staying home from work or school -- we're not going to be able to get through this," Park said.
