"The flu is peaking currently in the area," said epidemiologist Megan Patel of the Cook County Department of Public Health.

"Just because warm weather is here doesn't mean the flu disappears," said Dr. Julie Morita, chief of the immunization program for the Chicago Department of Public Health.

It's as important as ever to get flu shots, they said, because the vaccine is the best form of prevention. Prevention is vastly preferable to treating the illness after the onset of symptoms, and the most common strain has become resistant to Tamiflu, an anti-viral drug. Flu season often doesn't spike until late March.

"It's really not too late to get vaccinated, and many doctors have vaccine in their offices," Morita said.

This has been a milder flu season than in recent years, but it remains widespread in 30 states, according to the CDC.
