Doctors Now Administering Swine Flu Vaccine

Now instead of waiting in long lines, some people in Washoe County have the option to get the swine flu vaccine through their health care provider.
The state reports some 43 different county doctors and clinics have received their first shipment of the H1N1 vaccine.
But, Dr. Cheryl Hug-English, medical director at UNR's student health clinic (where the majority of patients fall into the high risk category 6 months to 24 years old) says they're still awaiting the first delivery. "There are some frustrations; we all wish we would get more and get it quicker. I think the fact we're getting it at all and it's only the end of October is outstanding."
Dr. Hug-English says the campus clinic normally dispenses about 2,000 doses of the seasonal flu vaccine. So for H1N1 she anticipates giving out more, but it's just a matter of waiting for the vaccine to arrive.
Renown just received another shipment. This time it was Dr. Heather Hockenberry's turn to get vaccinated.
The urgent care doctor says after treating countless swine flu patients, she's ready to be inocluated. "I feel like every time I see them I run the risk of being exposed to developing influenza."
Because treating them also means she's seen first-hand how awful the body aches and fever can be. "But in addition specifically with H1N1 we've been seeing a lot of patients also having gastro-intestinal symptoms in addition to the respiratory symptoms."
Dr. Hug-English says the illness itself is far worse than any potential side-effects from the vaccine. "It's reassuring to all of us that the vaccine is created in the same way the flu vaccine is created every year."
That's why once the shipment arrives she'll offer it to all her patients.
The next clinic is tomorrow - vaccinations will happen from 1pm to 7pm.
But here's the deal - they'll start handing out wristbands at 7am so expect to wait in line.
The health department office is located in building B at the Washoe County complex on 9th and Wells.
