Statesville fitness center crowds field that wants same dollars

Some local fitness centers are looking at the upcoming opening of the Statesville Fitness and Activity Center with a wary eye.
Gym owners and managers expect business to go on as usual when the long-awaited center opens Feb. 22. But, they say, some customers have already been lured to the new facility and the $150-per-year rates offered to city residents.
"I'm the one paying for this," said Joel Elliot, owner of Olympic Health Club. "They moved right behind me. It cuts into my pocketbook."
He doesn't think it's fair that his property taxes are going to pay for his health club's latest competition.
Drawing from conversations he's had, Elliot said he believes some people aren't even interested in some of the items the city spent thousands on, such as the rock-climbing wall.
"To me, the city of Statesville needs a skateboarding park for the kids," he said.
Elliot said he already has to compete with the YMCA of Iredell County for customers, and the cheaper rates at the city-subsidized recreation center are likely to hurt established gyms.
"It's going to get to the point where all the nonprofits run everyone out of business," he said.
The YMCA expects to lose some members to the recreation center as well.
YMCA Acting Chief Executive Officer Marcheta Sigmon-Campbell said the YMCA will continue to provide its services and plans to focus more on family fitness.
"As far as a pricing standpoint, we know we will never be able to match dollar for dollar what the recreation center can offer," she said. "We realize anytime something new comes to town, it is always an attractive venue."
Campbell said the nonprofit has tried to address the needs of the community and accommodate people who have been laid off during the economic downturn.
Peak Fitness Manager Heath Eutsler said he doesn't know if the Turnersburg Highway gym will lose any clients right now.
"There is no way we can compete with the city," he said. "We are in business to keep our clients and customers happy."
