Motivational speaker encourages Sundown Mountain kids

Early Childhood Education Center

The preschool students of Rebecca Boland and Emily Coyle recently learned about dental health through a visit by a dentist, the tooth fairy and Sully the Superhero from West Valley Pediatric Dentistry. The dentist brought bags of dental hygiene products to help students keep their teeth and gums healthy.

Rancho Gabriela Elementary

With the help of art teacher Stephanie Wojtovich, students at Rancho Gabriela entered the Scottsdale Horse Show art contest. The top 30 students from kindergarten through sixth grade were selected to attend the awards ceremony and possibly place at the show. Each winning student received two free tickets to the Arabian horse show, a T-shirt and a certificate. Congratulations to the following students:

Kindergarten and first grade: Drake Hacker, Natalie Hedges, Gabrielle Fredrick, Samantha Morris, Morgan Britton, Ciera Collins, Paige Coburn, Alejandra Lopez, Matt Terrealult and Leilany Ramos.

Second through fourth grade: Mari Labansat, Karissa Shannon, Lauyrn Johnson, Mckelvely Foster, Hunter Almer, Riley Judd, Alexis Kour, Elizabeth Kern, Lesley Bernal, Tatum Nez and Precious Jackson.

Fifth and sixth grade: Nicole Rosales, Dominique Smith, Ariel Rossi, Troy Johnson, Ayat Rassas, Banna Tesfay, Nadia Abbott, Deanna Thompson and Rachel Snidel.

Sundown Mountain Alternative Program

Jeff Morgan, Destineea Jones, Jose Lopez and Shynita Jones were selected to attend this year's Arizona Town Hall. Seventeen schools representing four counties attended the two-day event Feb. 11 and 12 at Arizona State University at the West campus. Participants divided into groups to discuss issues such as the effects of immigration on education and the importance of SATs and ACTs to post-secondary education. Lopez is excited about his future and believes that getting into a university will be an attainable goal after attending Estrella Community College in pursuit of a criminal justice degree. Morgan said his outlook on college was more positive than he expected after attending the meetings. All of the students enjoyed their experiences, including making new friends while staying in the college dorms.

Ron Glodoski, a successful entrepreneur, dynamic speaker and author of How to be a Successful Criminal, visited Sundown Mountain Feb. 12. His book has received critical acclaim from judges, police officers, educators, counselors and former gang leaders. While others may ask what can be done to help the nation's youth, Glodoski is providing answers and changing lives. Referring to his own experiences, he spoke to the students about choices, attitudes and survival.

Congratulations to April Zinter for being selected as this year's teacher of the year at Sundown Mountain. Zinter has taught in the district for the last seven years, spending two years at Dysart High before helping to open Willow Canyon High. Zinter has taught all levels of English and has spent the last three years teaching freshmen and juniors and the standards-based English class at Sundown Mountain. Moreover, she serves as testing coordinator and works endlessly on data collection to ensure that the program's decisions are data-driven. All at Sundown Mountain would like to thank her for all that she does.

Science students visited the anatomy and physiology lab at Grand Canyon University. where they studied the spinal cord, internal organs, muscles and primary arteries of dissected cadavers. Students learned how organs indicate cause of death, gaining health and fitness knowledge in the process. Avoiding alcohol, in particular, became a goal for students, who were shocked at the damage it can cause to the body.

Congratulations to January students of the month Destineea Jones and Stewart Sears. Sundown Mountain teachers and staff have chosen to honor these students for best overall performance in January. Keep up the good work.
