Mini training becomes fountain of youth

Parents I got laid off last July after working 10 years for a Noblesville beauty supply shop. I had been a cosmetology instructor or shop manager for 25 years in this area. After working my whole life, I thought, "What do I do?"

To be honest, I just started watching TV and eating. But one day last year I saw Heather Fink, who is with the National Institute for Fitness and Sport, talking on television about the NIFS Mini-Marathon training program.

I have a treadmill in my home and I was trying to work out about two times a week for 30 minutes. But I need to have a goal -- something to shoot for. I talked to Heather, and she was so encouraging. So I signed up for the 14-week program.

Other than walking a dog, I have never walked or run outside. This was just something I wanted to do to prove I wasn't a dying old lady. I'm not entered in the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon because by the time I made this decision, it was sold out, but Heather put me on a list and said I will likely be able to do it because others with entries will drop out. If I don't get in, I will do a different half-marathon. I also plan to do a 5K or 10K race before the Mini.

Every Wednesday, I walk with the beginner's group at NIFS. I'm the oldest one in my group. Under the training schedule, we walk four days a week and do cross-training one day. For cross-training, I do water aerobics at LA Fitness and take indoor golf lessons.

On my own, I walk outside to a park and around a basketball court. The weather has been bad, but I have "grippers" for the bottoms of my shoes. They enable you to walk on ice or snow without falling.

The first week of the program, I walked three miles, and I was just huffing and puffing, so I decided I needed to work out more at home. I started doing the treadmill faster for an hour. My knees and legs started swelling and got sore, so I rested for a while and walked in the pool instead.

Now, I'm walking outside again, and I really like it. We walked last week for four miles -- that's the longest I've ever walked. I was so excited. You'd think I won a marathon or something.

My kids are into exercise, and they told me I needed to lose weight. I've changed some habits. I never used to drink water, but I'm doing that. I stopped drinking Cokes. I am trying to lose weight, and I've already noticed my clothes are looser.

The NIFS training program is very good. It will be five miles this week -- I will do it. I'm just taking it one week at a time. My goal is just to finish the race.

Woodruff offers tips

Don't listen to negative comments. Focus on the positive and encouraging comments instead. Don't think you can't do it, just because you're older.

Join a training group. Don't try to do something like a half-marathon on your own. It's easier to do a race or physical challenge with help. You make friends.

Set specific goals. A lot of people say, "Oh, why are you doing that?" Just set your own goals and do it.
