Foundation donates $20000 to cancer patient fund

A total of 21 children gathered for the final day of the Storytelling Arts Center's arts and crafts camp Thursday in downtown Laurinburg. During the week-long session children ages six through 12 met for two hours daily to complete projects that included making decoupage bottles, constructing walker bags for the disabled, painting, and origami.
"All of the children work on the same types of crafts, each according to his or her own level," Storytelling Center Executive Director Jan Schmidt said. "They all seem to have had an enjoyable time this week."
One participant was 11 year old Annabelle Holman, who was accomplished enough in origami to teach her technique to some of the other kids.
"I started last year with an origami frog, and then I memorized how to do a crane," she said. "Now I'm teaching others to do it."
A rising sixth grader, Annabelle hopes to create 1,000 cranes, in keeping with the Japanese legend that says anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes will be granted a wish by a crane.
"One crane takes about five minutes to make," she said. "I hope I can make 1,000, and set a record maybe."
Rising second grader Emma Wilson of Laurinburg displayed what she called a "wheelchair pillow" to assist those in need of a velcro stripped bag that could be fastened to their walker or wheelchair.
"This is 'Toodles'", she said, referring to her artwork. "He's a friend of Mickey Mouse."
Program assistants for the arts and crafts camp were Caitlin Schmidt and Angela Holman.
The Storytelling Arts Center will next hold a Storytelling Camp, set to begin July 6 from 1 until 4 p.m. Registration will take place between 12:30 and 1 p.m.
The Storytelling Arts Center is located at 131 South Main Street in Laurinburg.
