Dr. Rita Claab, a family practice physician at the Ingalls Family Care Center in Tinley Park, tries her best to help patients sort out what is medical myth and what is fact.
"It's complicated now because there's a lot of information from a lot of sources," she said. "A lot of people (get their information online) or from marketing, and they just don't know what's what. Patients ... have so many things that they know about now ... because they're being bombarded with information. It's hard to filter who you're going to listen to."
Claab helped confused residents answer medical questions Saturday during the Tinley Park Park District's free health fair, which took place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Bettenhausen Recreation Center in Tinley Park.
The fair offered participants free screenings in hearing, blood pressure, body fat, depression and anxiety and osteoporosis. It had information on diabetes management, pediatric and physical therapy, varicose veins, breast and colon cancer, joint pain and stroke prevention.
"Screenings and education aren't really meant to take the place of a visit to the doctor's office," said Susan Fine, marketing communications director for Ingalls Memorial Hospital, which co-sponsored the event. "What we attempt to do at an event like this ... is (to) identify potential issues for people. When they come to us with their problems and concerns, we try to educate them as best as we can on-site and then direct them as to the best way to follow up after that."
Other services, such as reduced-cost blood tests, mini-massages, a sleep center and free "Lunch and Learn" seminar about smoking cessation delivered a wealth of information.
Fine said the fair was a way to celebrate the park district's partnership with the Ingalls Health System, which officially began in September.
"This event is a bit of an inauguration to that relationship," she said. "We're going to be doing a lot of other classes and programs and screenings and lectures in Tinley Park Park District facilities, so this is just the first of many events like this."
Betty Raymond, a retired Orland Park nurse, visited for an osteoporosis screening and scheduled a lung density test.
"I think events like this are very important," Raymond said. "They make people aware of their health and sort of get them up and out of the house."
Raymond, 76, said she is more concerned with how she lives than how long she will live.
"It's not necessarily the longevity that I'm concerned about; it's the quality of life," she said. "I'm conscious of what I eat and what I do, and I'm beginning to learn my limitations."
Terry Everheart, of Chicago Heights, came to have his heart and prostate examined.
"Screenings are important because if you find something out early, it's always beneficial," he said. "People are more conscientious of their health nowadays. They eat better. They try to exercise, and they avoid bad things like alcohol and tobacco and other drugs. People are just generally much more aware and interested in their health.
